Looking to pick up an inexpensive acoustic guitar. I'm basically a novice so I won't be playing out or gigging-- just strumming Dylan songs in my basement. I saw a Yamaha FG 700 and a Fender CD 60 on Amazon for $199 and and Epiphone DR100 for $100. Can anyone give suggestions?

For "Playability" alone Yahamas are supposed to be good. I'm on the hunt for one myself. If a guitar is murder to play, you are much more likely to put it down.

What libertycaps says is bang on, try the guitar first - do not buy blind. If a guitar is set up wrong, or has not been set up at all which is often the case buying online, you will probably give up on it after a while. A massively high action plus heavy strings is not what a beginner wants. For a novice player, I'd string it with 10s or 11s as the tension of bigger strings can put also put people off playing.

Out of the three you have listed the Yamaha is the best of the 3 in my opinion.

Get the one that sounds and plays the nicest in your budget. Solid top is what to look for, if you can.
Go to a music store, and try everything you can (in your range). Figure out what you like about each, and what you dont (tone, and playing wise)
If they have 30 of the same guitar PLAY THEM ALL.
take notes, if you have to. then narrow down.
The difference between buying blind, and something you've actually had your hands on is more than any dollar amount.

My acoustic wasn't what i planned on buying, but as soon as i played it i knew it was the right guitar for me.
20 years later, with all the nicks, and scrapes, and a cracked side...i wouldn't trade it for anything.
It's so much a part of how I play (even being an awful player) that I very rarely enjoy playing someone else's acoustic for more that just a bit.

Any of those 3 you mentioned will serve you well.
Also check out this link from Radial Engineering. They make really good pro level stuff.

at black Friday or Christmas holiday sales, GC usually has a nice selection of starter acoustics for stupid cheap. 2 years ago I snagged an Ibanez dreadnaught for $79+tx. I play that guitar the second most of all my guitars. the only one that gets more time is the ultra-swede because it is like a toy LP and I do most of my practicing/composing/arranging with it.

the rest of the time, I grab ibansky(that's its name heh)

fwiw, it played like a dream straight out of the box.

I would also recommend Yamaha acoustics when they blow those out for $100 or $129...

Yamaha is seriously underrated, especially some of their electrics. they also have a series of w/e $500-$800 or so acoustics that sound damn nice, like almost 3x price taylor nice. (sorry tho, taylors are super sweet to my ears)

edit: btw, I also have a Taylor acoustic so no bs. I heart ibansky!!!!

so ok, old topic....
