Last - going to pile up a few as it's felt like one drawn-out festival the last few days:
Friday, left work early to get up to London for the Colour Haze extended blissathon. Saturnia opened, nice hippy-friendly tranced-out stuff, bit early in the evening though! Colour Haze played just under 3 hours I think, oldies, new ones... the sound was lush, the space was big and open and there was 'space' in the set to relax and mill about and talk rather than just focus intently as they played 6 songs then left. Long sets are good. Especially when it's someone like CH at the helm.
Saturday back down to Bristol, couple of hours at a beer festival then on to see OM. Caught the last few minutes of Big Naturals who weren't billed, gutted to miss them as it's always a trip. OM were good, worked much better than in that big 013 room. We stood right up front so had a perfect view of Al inexplicably having a rock diva tantrum and kicking a spotlight and his mic stand off the stage! Anyway, the bass seemed to get fatter and angrier after that so no complaints. Was a bit done in by a cold, hangover, tiredness, spliffs and beer by that point so everything gets pretty vague. Ended up with a couple of days ill off work :-)
Last night saw Gonga and Voivod. Gonga dabble in many scenes and ROCK in all of them, out-spacing spacerockers, out-stonering stoner, out-dooming doomers. They've lost the annoying singer and stripped it back to great powerful sound and good riffs. Voivod (I'm ashamed to say) were a complete mystery to me, passed-up seeing them at Roadburn (twice? 3 times?) in favour of other more exciting things, but I enjoyed their set. Punky, thrashy, heavy. Bonus points for covering Pink Floyd (Astronomy Domine). New stuff sounded good too. They played over an hour which is pretty impressive in a small hot club for gentlemen of their age! First night of the tour, and they're well up for it.
NEXT show? Diary says either a jungle/breakcore rave Friday next week, or a grind/crust/thrash/hardcore alldayer that day and the next. Dylan Carlson's playing Bristol the week after that, should check out his solo stuff to get a feel of whether to get a ticket.
