Rivers and lagoons are probably the worst possible places for shark attacks. Bull sharks don't grow as big as Great Whites, but unlike Great Whites, are more than happy to eat the fuck out of (and not just have an exploratory taste of) land based mammals that happen to blunder into the water. I've personally seen a bull shark munch a massive cross-bred duck in the knee-deep Narrabeen Lagoon. Not just in Oz either.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... beach.html

Anyway, I survived my trip down the Far South Coast without getting et. Didn't even see a shark, but my girlfriend still has the bruises in her arm from my mate's daughter's grip after the dark shadow in the break turned out to be a big fuck off Fur Seal, and not a big fuck off shark like she thought. The next day a couple of beaches were closed after shark sightings though.

I know mate, my Italian GF didn't want to swim in POrt Kembla beach (best for surfing in the Illawarra area) because she was afraid a shark would attack her, but when she read the article of the marine lake attack in the Illawarra Mercury, she swore she wouldn't put another toe in the water, hehehhehehehehehhehehehehehhehehe....she just can't understand why us Aussies still go surfing in the ocean.....Europeans will never understand:):);:)!!!!

Nice! Almost nice enough for me to go in in shorts today, I miss swimming around the local dolphins and getting pounded into sand during winter because I hate bodysurfing in wet suits (too buoyant).

Got absolutely slammed today because I thought I'd show off to my partner and the hot Japanese lady who lives downstairs from us by riding from the point through into the shorebreak and (in my mind) step from the nose onto the sand like Nat Young.

Instead of looking cool, I got pile-driven into the sand head first and nearly clobbered by my own board for my trouble. The hot Japanese lady thought it was funny, but my partner thought it was hilarious.

I'm just glad the missus was too busy chatting to Hot Japanese Lady to have captured it on film!

RIP Micheal Peterson

The missus has been at a fundraiser tonight for the Schizophrenia Fellowship (for whom she works) at The Deck Bar in Dee Why, which features a massive 15 meter long mural of MP on a wave.

MP was considered to be the Kelly Slater of his day until Schizophrenia and drugs ended his surfing career. I was going to attend, except I have a fucking job that sucks my after hours life like a bloody octopus.

Must be the back side of the system that caused this a few days ago.

I can (sort of) surf!

Been on a camping weekend with a load of the 16-22 year old scallies we support (the horror) and we did a morning's surfing.
Got onto a few waves laid down straight away from years of splashing around and catching waves without a board, and managed to get stood up on about 3.
It wasn't pretty, it wasn't particularly stylish, but it was good fun and I'd jump at the chance to do it again!
Tiring though, and given that I managed to knacker my shoulder turning over in bed last night (wtf?) I'm not sure I'll be out there again any time soon.

I'll have to tag along with my surf-mad mate sometime this summer, have a proper full day session and chill out without a load of rude bastards shouting at each other to be in charge of.
