...going to try and resurrect the legendary off-topic thread from sr.com that is greatly missed.
see if we can add onto it.

Came across a band called Cellos from Ontario...good mix of 90s Canadian noise bands like Kittens and present day KEN Mode, along with some cool angular note progression stuff like Shiner and Shudder to Think. check the band camp linky

Cellos is pretty good. I really can't think of anything along those lines that I've found recently. Maybe The Hated, but they were more a late 80s Husker Du/early emo kind of thing.

I was more than a little depressed that my (our) huge topic got "sucked into the void". Although maybe we covered just about everything anyways. But this one may inspire me to poke around the blogs a bit more. The regional ones seem to have some hidden gems, stuff that never made it out of Milwaukee or Atlanta or Philly. I need to find some more of that.

Snart, it's funny you mentioned
Philly....I grew up there until I moved
up to Boston in 2001. Went to tons
of shows during the 90s there, and although
there was a consistent live scene (aka
a good stop for all touring bands)
there wasnt much depth of a local rock
scene. That seems to have changed since
I have left...with bands like dysrythmia and Rosetta
and the relapse records influence, decibel
magazine,etc...there is definitely more
of a rock feel there now, but Philly
has always been a soul and hip hop
city first and formost....The Goats were my favorite
local group throughout the early to mid 90s. Video below

http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri= ... FPw_kfvbKE

Anyone
the digs early 90s hip hop should check these guys out.
They were more angry and political than public
enemy with better lyrics, a killer live band behind 3 mc's.
Complete drug addicts and drunks...but held it together
for some really incredible shows.
They were as "heavy" as a hip hop group could
be. Sort of cult like fanbase. The Roots & G. Love were
the biggest local names going.... Besides Stinking Liz,
the indie rock band Caterpillar, and Bardo Pond
(which I just can't get into. I'd rather listen
to The Subarachnoid Space)....there was not
much else local heavy or interesting rock during the 90s there.
There was probably some scattered death metal
I didn't know about, but I frequented the local
venues pretty often, and anything local
seemed like either ska or rap rock, neither
well done. If I was missing someone, I'd definitely
like to know about it.

This dude has some stuff, much more to the hardcore/metalcore end of things. Not a lot there, but since I like Starkweather and Day Of Suffering I checked out the rest of the stuff. Not really everything from Philly, so I guess it doesn't really count as a local scene blog.

Dan, do you write in notebook first or something?

Anyway, nice to see this turd floating, somewhat, at the top of the punchbowl. I really enjoyed that OFF topic thread back on the old board.

I wrote up that shitty blurb from my I-phone,
which leads to sketch looking output.

I guess I should have realized that there was a Philly
hardcore scene, just didn't remember anything
memorable, not compared to NYC or Boston
at the time

The Hated? From where?
There was a The Hated fom Southern California (OC) used to play the Cuckoo's Nest.
Funniest thing ever, one time a promoter wouldn't allow them to play because he said their name backwards spelled Death.

These guys were from Maryland. Their stuff is really scattered over a bunch of demos and tapes and 7 inches, but I found a haphazard series of collections floating around the blogoverse. Very Husker Du/Rites Of Spring, raw yet fairly sappy, but I like that stuff.

As for the topic again, there's a pretty sweet blog I found here: http://computersthatbreathe.blogspot.com/

that I've barely cracked into, pretty much dedicated to extinct stuff we might like. Not a whole ton, but I considered it just what I was looking for.

Did I ever mention Tonnage from Minnesota? I was just listening to their album "The Fujita Scale" in my car, forgot how cool they are. If you're into Unsane/Shallow North Dakota/Tad type stuff, with a little Prong or Deftones here and there. I have the last one "The Swell", also. Bought off some probably now defunct record label from up there in the frozen tundra.

Shallow North Dakatotas entire disc is a fucking monster. What a terribly over looked band.

I dig that tonnage tune 'the swell'. Reminds me of -16-

I saw a cool band called Deleted Scenes from D.C. open up for
The Life and Times this past Friday night in Boston. Very slick,
off kilter synth and post rock, very similar to the band
Roma 79 out of San Fran. Good harmonies, sort of catching
that oh so popular 80s keyboard atmosphere thing that has come
back around. I'd recommend looking them up, but what might be even a better
find is another D.C. band called Medications on Dischord. Very catchy mathy post
punk in the d.c. tradition....reminds quite a bit of the band
Ring, Cicada and a little Self-Evident but maybe better songwriting. See linky
of song "Home Is Where We Are" from their 2010 album 'Completely Removed'

Haven't thought of Dischord in a while. Once I ate up all those Fugazi and Q and Not U albums, I forgot they existed other than to release Ian Mackaye's goofy pop project.

I don't think I ever saw any mention of the Northern Ireland band Therapy?
Made their roots in the 90s, and I think are still active. Pretty cool combinations of noise rock with pop hooks. For some reason, I think of Rocket from the Crypt without the horns...when I think of Therapy? Except these guys have more shit happening, guitar textures with some depth at vocals. Pretty cool unique sound. I owned "Troublegum" back in the day, but I think the track "Church of Noise" linked is a good example of their style.

I never got into them, something about the vocals. but they definitely remind me of For Love Not Lisa. A couple of second-tier 90s noisy grunge bands with a song on a soundtrack that tends to be the only track of theirs people know. For FLNL it was their song in "The Crow", for Therapy? it was something in "Judgment Night". I have that somewhere, I can't even remember who the rap group was in that "duet".

Therapy?'s duo was with some solo rap dude named Fatal. Odd to say the least. Judgement night soundtrack looked better on paper than it actually delivered. After Helmet and maybe Faith No More, the match-ups didn't really work that well. The Crow soundtrack, on the other hand...while not flawless, had much more depth. One band I always wondered about was Medicine. Was that catchy tune "Time Baby" a reason to check out their catalog? Seamus, got any knowledge? Sounds like Ken Andrews territory. Pretty cool video linked.

The only thing else I got tonight is Jim beam, this low scoring LSU vs Bama game and The Fucking Champs man. At certain times, they are my favorite instrumental band of all time.

I recently spun Troublegum... not a bad album, and it definitely has that 1994 alternative radio production.

I don't remember if Babe The Blue Ox were mentioned in the old thread, but i dug 'em way back when. not as enthused nowadays.

Here's a band from Portland, Oregon sort of mixing spacey pop post rock, with pretty clean vocals. Kind of catchy. Sounds like the dude from Gozu playing 90s alt rock, or is there a difference?

I don't really like Gozu, but these guys are pretty cool. Maybe we can arrange a trade with Portland. If they throw in LaMarcus Aldridge for players to be named later, we'll call it a deal.

for fans of Akimbo, relatively new band including drummer and vocalist/guitarist from Akimbo
called Sandrider. Pretty similar, maybe more melodic, less spazzy than Akimbo, but still
grungy and post punky/post hardcore with a little more indie rock twist.
Not a bad listen for free

in mid-west rock news.....the mighty Shiner is going to release "The Egg" on vinyl,
and apparently reunite for 4 shows, 1 in each city...New York, Chicago, Kansas City, and L.A.

One more forgotten band....

Placer from Boston. JR (drummer from Cave In), Andrew Schneider (producer, Slughog, Throttlerod, etc) and Patrick Gleason playing pedal steel (bassist from Stompbox). Only one album called "Summer" as far as I know, but pretty cool shit. Dirty dirgy typical low end bass from Schneider, combined with some angular guitar coupled with some nice pedal steel throughout gives it almost a mid-west and southern vibe. Think maybe Players Club meets mid era Black Crowes. Nothing on YouTube, but the "Summer" album is on ITunes. I recommend checking it out.

Made me think of a less abrasive Barkmarket. And strangely the vocals get Mark Lanegan at moments.

Medicine's first two albums, Shot Forth Self Living and The Buried Life got tons of spins in the day but I don't go back often. They fit in with say Jesus and Mary Chain/ My Bloody Valentine/Sonic Youth/early Flaming Lips. The last LP and a later EP were popular too but never did it for me. Worth checking out of you like that kinda thing.
