Can we have a surfing thread here? I know there's a few interested folks.

Just picked this up off ebay.

Looks about 45 years old, but it's only 2 years old. Because I'm an idiot, I forgot to check it had a legrope plug. I haven't ridden it yet because I've had a board without a legrope before and the novelty wears off quickly. Well, that and the fact the surf is fucking massive (and cold) at the moment. I'll probably glass one in this weekend.

I haven't had a board I could actually ride in years. My last longboard got smashed when I was about 16 (20 years ago) and there's no way in hell I can ride the thruster I bought to replace it, except maybe as a knee-board. I also had a virtually brand new Barry Bennet 7' single fin pintail from the early 70's, which I sold to a British Backpacker for 100 bucks years ago. Similar boards go for over 500 today. Kicking myself!

I'm excited and shitting myself at the same time about this.

Funny you should post this, while I was on my way to work this morning I was thinking to myself "I should start surfing again this summer". Been skating a lot, so the ultimate goal would be to get out early for a morning for an early surf session, then hit the skatepark in the afternoon, but that might be a little ambitious right now as I haven't surfed in 6 or 7 years and I know I'll be really tired after the first few times I go out. That board looks rad but riding without a leash gets old quick.

I've always wished that I'd learned to surf, seems like something I would have enjoyed...

Hey L. Ron - which beach would you hit up? Rockaway, Coney, Brighton?

L. Ron is exclusively a Fire Island guy.

Rockaway, Brighton and Coney don't have any good breaks. Also Long Beach out on Long Island. Also Montauk. Besides apparently being a great place for bolt-style snoodling encounters, Fire Island has some really good breaks.

That's what I thought. I've only ever seen it work in Rockaway, and it looked like the training wheels/bunny slope version of surfing.

L. Ron, You need to get over to Nantucket and Cisco and Nobadeer Beaches... They have some of the best breaks on the East Coast.

greenskeeper, you're right about Rockaway, but it's still pretty cool that you can take the subway to go surfing. ham, would love to get up there but need to get some skills back before I can justify a trip. btw, was checking out videos from Pro-Tec Pool Party contest at The Vans Off The wall TV video site with Small Stone bands providing the background music, good stuff.

Ha ha!
NCR's ditto post forces me to do the same (just this once) because it saves me time on this, a deadline day at work.

Nice squash tail NCR! I like how its "hip-y" down low for lay back bottom turns. Its good to start a quiver with a reliable longboard and no matter what you acquire afterwards, you can always return to it. I love taking the 8' out once a month and digging the different feel. I'll type more later, but I'm getting in the water right now before work. Here is a blog thats tailor made for people who surf and dig music. Lots of cool pics from a guy who surfs in my neck of the woods and lots of dwnloads of a varied mix ofobscure music:

Addendum: The water dropped about 7 degrees from 48 hours ago and its back to being unseasonably cool. It was friggin' 49 degrees two weeks ago so you know what that means: this is a prolonged La Nina weather system and everything we just encountered weather wise this last year, we are going to get again in the next 12 months. East coasters take note. Another brutal winter is coming your way.

Is that the Newport Wedge? I can't watch the video because my damn ISP has choked my speed down to dialup speeds because I've downloaded too much this month.

That place is crazy!

what the real intentions behind that video? some people just pose with a surfboard and think that gets them cred or something like one lame antic after another is how you go about getting noticed. like stoner rock bands, they want to fit in more. whatever. no doubt I'm not regretting my decision to forget that band.

When I was in North Carolina I stayed out all day on the bodyboard/boogieboards. Broke all three of them that we had. Everybody else was bored after like half an hour. I bet if I ever lived anywhere where surfing was the thing, I would have had to learn.

The Wedge messed one of my cousins up good years ago, dislocating his shoulder and snapping his ulna when he put his arm out save his head from smashing into the sand. Gotta love Surfline's take on the place:

Best Tide:
deadly at all tides

Best Swell Direction:
S, SW

Best Size:
6 to 20 feet

Best Wind:
E, NE

Perfect-O-Meter:
9 (1=Lake Erie; 10=Jeffreys Bay)

Bottom:
sand

Ability Level:
advanced to psychotic

Local Vibe:
quietly thuggish

Hazards:
Broken body and board, death from impact into the shallow bottom or on someone else

I just finished reading The Wave by Susan Casey.
Pretty cool book about big-wave surfers, rogue waves and giant waves.

That's some crazy shit Stickman. The first time I ever heard about the Wedge was the first time I saw Endless Summer as a youth. It looked pretty fucking gnarly in the movie of course, but it was nothing compared to when I actually got to see it in person(was visiting my cousins in Huntington Beach and went over one night and watched it break). Serious, serious props to anyone who can ride that shit, be it bodysurfing, on a sponge, skimboard, or surfboard.

I reckon I would have had a crack at it when I was younger, not now though. Worst wipeout I ever had was from bodysurfing. Knocked the breath out of me ,thought I broke my neck when I hit the bottom and was about to die.

The "quietly thuggish" vibe seems to be the way they describe most of the breaks around me. My own is described as "having an undercurrent of violence" I've never felt it, but I'd imagine the Brazillian and Brit backpackers would cop a hassle.
