Cassettes? Walkmans? You speak my language my friend. There are a lot of good recommendations so far and yet no one has stated the obvious. In the 80's they were the 2nd coming of Sabbath (and no not Candlemass)..................

...........TROUBLE.

The first 5 albums are essential Doom with a touch of Pysche working it's way in the latter albums.

Trouble (1st self titled aka Psalm 9)
The Skull (Their best if you ask me. Also check out the band The Skull with 2 ex-Trouble members)
Run to the Light
Trouble (2nd self titled)
Manic Frustration.

Plastic Green Head ain't bad either but not as essential as the first 5.

MONOLORD,

so good, esp, the torqued out mix on the Empress Rising cass. BUT this and Vaenir seem to have "the sound" but just not the songs. Just melds into an unmemorable blur after a while for me. Ditto the WARHORSE 2xLP

It's not always easy for me to recommend things to other people due to different personal preferences and different definitions of genres. A lot of great bands have been mentioned. I've seen doom bands, sludge bands and sludge/doom bands. When I think of sludge, I think of bands like Eyehategod, Weedeater, Crowbar, Bongzilla, Buzzov*en, Fudge Tunnel, etc. With doom, I think of Cathedral, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass, etc. Sludge/doom, I think of Church Of Misery, Earthride, Sleep, Monolord, etc. That being said, I really love the two Goatess albums as a new doom band! Kinda melodic but heavy, with great singing. I would recommend Eagle Twin, With The Dead, Curse The Sun, Graves At Sea, Dopelord, Ramesses and Wizard Smoke as Sludge/Doom bands. I liked the last couple Zoroaster (from ATL) albums. I loved the last Apostle Of Solitude as a doom album. Check out Doomriders...silly name, but great band by members of Converge/Cave In. I would recommend The Mighty Nimbus, Mala Suerte and Behold! The Monolith as sludge bands...also, if you like a little more sludge metal, check out Soilent Green from NOLA. Check out a sludge band from Brighton called Dopefight. Personally, I am a huge Yob fan...as well as Warhorse, so I can't imagine you not liking them? But that is the beauty of varying perspectives on this site. That's all I can think of now. Hope this helps...if not, fuck off...kidding.

I had to chime in on Dnice's mention of Fiftywatthead "Fogcutter"...it's not doom but one of my favorite raw, riff albums...like a sludgier version of Pitchfork era Clutch. Along those same lines is New Jersey's Clamfight. "I Vs. The Glacier" would be a good starting point for them. And as far as heavy, evil guitar tones go...Celtic Frost "Monothiest" is an amazing album! Kinda gothic, but one of the heaviest albums ever made. Not so much doom, but a definite sludge overlap. The Sloth album was good too. I really enjoyed this year's Wretch album... Koza is a good new sludge band from TN...and Wall Of Sleep was an awesome doom band from Hungary.

I can't believe EARTHRIDE only got one mention... they are my favorite MD Doom band. What makes them stand out is the vocals and the insane groove. (And the guitar tone is awesome, too.)
