Definite Portal influence at work here, but they're definitely not a clone.

I'm so clueless as to wtf is going on with new music that I had no idea there was NEW GORGUTS with LONGSTRETH on drums.

Pretty huge sounding... this is exactly what I'm needing in 2013. Tech without the blur.

^I was going to go on another rant about every one of these new-old school bands being Incantation clones but i see that's from twenty years ago. Ha.

Somehow NJ's finest band managed to slip a new one by me last year... just hearing it now. It's a burly Viking metal concept album about The Hobbit. Which is basically everything I need out of a death metal album in 2013.

"Red Dragon" from Red Dragon. The cover features a giant freaking red dragon, in case you weren't sure. It's like Amon Amarth with serious balls, or Unleashed if they still released good albums:

One more thing about Helcaraxë--they have an mp3 only EP snarkily entitled Resurrection Through Cartridge which, as a child of the 80's, is exactly what I was hoping for:

Found this gem just clicking around the youtubes... they're calling it "blackened death" but honestly it sounds like something from before black and death were fully-formed and separate, and were still joined Siamese-like in all the wrong places.

Why can't more of the new-osdm be like this? The Incantation influence is there, but so's a huge dose of CELTIC FROST's epic war gallop, Beherit's grime and eerie atmosphere, maybe even early Sepultura and Sarcofago. But more importantly, this guy is tossing out incredible riffs like his life depends on it. I'd think fans of The Chasm or Teitanblood would know what's up.

Saw this beast mentioned in a bunch of year-ends:

Mixes tech with slam and comes out somewhere near Suffo. I normally hate slam and anything associated, but this sounds like the roided-out jock that used to beat up Pig Destroyer. Just nonstop wreck mosh kill. It's like all the beatdown parts from the last Origin album, and no other parts. Even the solos rule. I can't stop listening to it.

Seconded. Who is that?

New Gorguts is great. Anyone like Gigan? Been meaning to delve a little deeper into them.

18-ish months later...

That Gorguts reunion was off the hook! I can't remember what conflict I had, but I'm really bummed I missed seeing them because that comeback album is actually my favorite Gorguts album!

This ADVERSARIAL album is incredible! It's brand new too! And they're from Toronto rube! (I know you check in here from time to time). I don't know how to use the bandcamp links here, so click on the link below to hear it.

Agreed...that band and album are top-notch punishment. It was killing me last night, but I managed to survive.

This is the only death metal album I've gotten into this year so far. Straight up Death worship but the songwriting is fantastic.

Huh, they were here last night at the black/death fest. I only got tickets to tonight's show. I should still get my fill of good stuff tonight.

Thanks for the Adversarial recommendation - got it almost a year to the day. Good shit!

Anyone check out the gorguts ep? I liked it well enough but it didn't stick with me like Coloured Sands. Apparently anything they do next will be a long time coming. Otherwise loving the last Horrendous.

No problem on the Adversarial recommend. Just trying to keep the pushing the good stuff.

I had the same reaction to the Gorguts EP. It just didn't stick like Coloured Sands. It didn't stop me from taking the next day off from work when they come to town in a month though. It should be off the hook. They're playing with "Brain Tentacles", which is Aaron from KEELHAUL, Dave Witte and Bruce Lamont, as well as Intronaut (who I really don't care to see, but whatever). I figure it'll be worth it. When Colin Marston came through with Krallice last month, he rearranged several brains with that show; my own included. I figure Gorguts has to be in the same league as that.

Cool - didn't know about that band. Looks like that tour comes through here first week of October. Keelhaul, now there's a band I'd love to see again.

Pretty blackened around the edges, but death at the core. It's two guys from Dethroned Emperor, and the drummer played in Disma and Funebrarum.
