Losing Rod Evans and Nick Simper was like YES losing Peter Banks and Tony Kaye (and Bill Bruford). You're only young and hungry once in your life.

I love Mk 1 almost as much as Mk 2. I'm reading Smoke On The Water: The Deep Purple Story by Dave Thompson right now. Takes me back to my late teens when I was pretty much obsessed with DP. The third, s/t album is my favorite of the early stuff, but Shades is certainly good.
