This topic really got into my head last night and I decided to put this list of 25 together. It was harder than I thought without resorting to more than 1 tape per artist. I kept it to rock oriented stuff. Obviously anything James Brown, Wilson Pickett did in the 60's is VERY hard and sometimes heavy. Definitely curious to see what others come up with.

MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum
Grand Funk Railroad - Grand Funk
The Stooges - The Stooges
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Free - Tons of Sobs
Johnny Winter - Johnny Winter
Led Zeppelin - I
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced
Link Wray - Jack The Ripper
Deep Purple - The Book of Taliesyn
Vanilla Fudge - Rock & Roll
Leslie West - Mountain
Tom Jones - Live in Las Vegas - At the Flamingo
The Who - Tommy
Dick Dale - Surfer's Choice
Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!
Lonnie Mack - The Wham of that Memphis Man!
Cream - Wheels Of Fire
Jeff Beck Group - Truth
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
Steppenwolf - Steppenwolf
Santana - Santana
The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics
Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency!

Nice! I'll come up with mine, and I'll also go ahead and post the 80's one since I've been thinking about that one as well.

EDIT: I lied. I'm not deleting squat. : )

If you just use 1969, you can find tons of great albums that fit the bill. That said, 67-69 was pretty rich with albums that hit that sweet spot.

Nobody mentioned The Damnation of Adam Blessing?
Chicago Transit Authority?

Those are just two examples.

Yeah, great, GodShifter. Thanks for doing it. : )

It's not easy, is it?
Having said that, and as you said before, the well still isn't dry.

I would imagine that Poisin Ivy has some good ideas, too.

No, not as easy as I had alluded to it being, but it was fun. I'd like to see if anyone can come with more that haven't been mentioned yet.

How 'bout this classic...

Image

Black Cat Bones - Barbed Wire Sandwich

Chocolate Watchband - No Way Out
Chocolate Watchband - The Inner Mystique
Chocolate Watchband - One Step Beyond
The Illusion - The Illusion
The Illusion - Together (As a Way of Life)
Josefus - Get Off My Case
The Kingsmen In Person
Paul Revere & The Raiders - Greatest Hits (Stepping Stone, etc.)
The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed (includes Gimme Shelter, Live With Me, Midnight Rambler, Monkey Man)
The Rolling Stones - Through The Past Darkly (includes Jumpin' Jack Flash)
The Kinks - Greatest Hits [ok, only a Hard Rock band on occasion, but this LP features You Really Got Me and All Day and All of the Night- two of the earliest and best 'hard' Rock songs of the era, and songs which proved to be quite influential as well]

The Back From The Grave comp series is loaded with raw and intense (and sometimes crazed) songs from 60's American Garage bands.

Geez, I was going to add something but I'm all out. Great list(s).

Can offer a comp though - Ugly Things. Esp the Creatures who performed the title track.

Not bad.

How does this grab you?

The Spats, with 'She Done Moved', one of my fave tracks. It's an old Blues song, but the Spats change it/arrange it and make it intriguingly weird and dramatic. I also like the way they altered the lyrics.
