I just downloaded ZZ Top's "Six Pack" from Amazon after being assured by the two reviewers there that these are the original recordings and not the fuckered-up versions. For $23 bucks, that's a swell deal. But don't take my word for it, sample them at the site yourselves before downloading!

One of the reviewers is right though, some songs are louder than others. Weird.

Early ZZ Top is godly (first album, "Rio Grande Mud", "Tres Hombres", "Deguello", "Fandango", "Tejas").....they were near metallic on songs like "Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers" and "Heard It On The X". Someone had said to me that they thought that Motorhead were going for a "Tres Hombres" look on the cover of "Ace Of Spades", and I wouldn't doubt it...."No Class" is basically "Tush".

Early ZZ Top is the best. The best, I say.

I still have no idea why they added all that "Eliminator" style drum shit to the first 6 tapes. Makes no sense to me. There are mp3-tapes from an excellent vinyl rip of Tejas somewhere out there.

Rhino is reissuing Rio Grande Mud and Degüello on LP-tape on 1/11/11. My copy of Rio is still in great shape but might pick up the other one even though they've changed the cover.

I was wondering about the other reissues. The Tres Hombres and Fandango! reissues from a couple of years back are minty tits.

Yeah, the CD-tape reissues of Tres Hombres and Fandango are mint DELUXE (still not sure how I feel about the term minty tits).

I have no idea why they wont reissue First Album, Rio Grande Mud and Tejas on CD-tape with the original mixes and bonus tracks. Weird.

Tres Hombres and Fandango are the mostest popularest, so it made sense to reissue them first (same reason why the Tony Martin Sabbath albums were reissues first). Afterwards it's probably some reverse engineered algorithm based on sales and chatter on the internets, innerwebs, and booked faces.

I heard it's because Dusty Hill hates the term "minty tits" being used in connection with the old ZZ Top tapes.

Dusty Hill is neither dusty nor a hill, so I wouldn't believe a goddamn thing he says.

Billy did some mighty tasty (and subtle) Blues guitar playing on RIO GRANDE MUD's 'Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell'. The word "exquisite" might even be appropriate.

After hearing that, my respect for the band rose exponentially.

There are excellent vinyl rips of all the early zz top stuff out there, if you know where to look.

Deguello seemed to escape the remix for some reason. I used to post at Pro Sound Web forums, and Terry Manning--the guy that had done all those early ZZ Top records (and even the 80's ones)--wasn't too happy about Warner going and redoing those albums. I don't hate those remixes as much as some people do, but my main complaint is that there's no evidence that there was any remix or tampering.....Warner didn't list it in the liner notes, they just sort of tried to pass it off as if those records always sounded that way. That band at that time, you couldn't get a better sounding power trio.....there was nothing that didn't need to be there, and surprisingly, the economy of the songs never got boring or stale. That's a hard thing to do, because alot of bands have tried the "stripped down" sound and have failed miserably. One thing that I learned is that they'd double tracked the toms on alot of that early stuff.

I remember that Terry Manning interview. That had some great information, like double tracking the toms. That guy had such an amazing career, starting at Stax, working with the Yardbirds and engineering parts of Zep III, then ZZ Top. Incredible!
