Okay, I'm not a HUGE Testament fan, Practice What You Preach is alright, and some of their latter day albums are pretty badass, but I love this debut.

Where do you cats think it belongs in the overall pantheons of thrash metal? I'm not sure I'd put it top five, but probably top ten thrash albums.

the only Testament album I like/own, still had their own edge before sounding too much like Metallicrap, it's a great album but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of the thrash heap, maybe top 25 if I was in the right mood

Well again, they got better after they got rid of Souza and changed their name to Testament. The debut is killer. For me personally though I think they were at their best when they got all death metal heavy on Low, Demonic and The Gathering (although I have a soft spot for The Ritual)

Yeah the Skolnick stuff was a bit too noodly for me, but he was good.

Never was a big Testament fan either. This is literally the tape that made me say "enough!" when it comes to thrash metal. I heard it not so long ago and it was much better than I remember it being. Saw them open for Slayer recently and they were really good.

It wouldn't make my personal top 10 since I'd rate early Exciter, Voivod and even Overkill above them alongside my faves from Slayer, Metallica and Exodus. But they do deserve their place. Who knows what would have happened if Steve Souza hadn't of jumped ship to Exodus and they put out a tape before 1987?

Listened to it this morning, again, I still dig the riffs, melodies, etc. It's definitely moving towards a more technical standpoint for thrash, but I think it's still pretty immediate material, it's got aggression.

Definite top ten thrash albums for me.

I really liked The Formation Of Damnation. Probably more than The Gathering.
