1987 Permanent Vacation
1989 Pump
1993 Get A Grip
1997 Nine Lives
2001 Just Push Play
2004 Honkin' With Bobo

Do any of these albums have any redeeming qualities?

In 2010, guitarist Joe Perry revealed his distaste for the album, Just Push Play, stating that:

"I don't think we've made a decent album in years. Just Push Play is my least favorite. When we recorded it there was never a point where all five members were in the room at the same time and Aerosmith's major strength is playing together. It was a learning experience for me: it showed me how not to make an Aerosmith record"-Wikipedia

Permanent Vacation and Pump have some good tracks, mainly those without the wannabe-Bon-Jovi-choruses. Honkin On Bobo is a lame concept executed surprisingly well.
But the truth is, why bother with latter-day-Aerosmith when you can listen to Rocks or Toys In The Attic?

This is a trick question. The best Aerosmith tapes released after 1986 are Live Classics and Live Classics II.

Yeah, that's the premise of this thread. Obviously Rocks, and others early Aerosmith rules. I'm pretty sure the latter stuff is pretty weak. I'm very familiar with the popular stuff from radio and MTV, but never listened to any of these albums. Guess I'm hoping something in there is surprisingly good. I really doubt it. Maybe someone out there loves this shit and can make a convincing argument.

..........how about the Joe Perry Project tapes? I got a copy of, Once a rocker, always a rocker", which is ok. The comp. of the three recs. I found is good; "buzz, buzz", etc. a good half dozen strong cuts.

Let The Music Do The Talking rocks out like a mother, but that came out in like 79/80 so it makes more sense than any of the late model Aerosmith being any good.

I'd go with Pump, not because it's great - it's marginally good and inoffensive - but because I was slaying all a ton of gash the year it was released.

Bit like The Stones thread - all bar JPP have a handfull of decent tunes, but are stuffed with filler and tunes that have one eye on the pop charts. HoB has the best playing, but Tyler's vocals are horrible - the DvD that came out indicates that it was Joe Perry's pet project, and it would be easy think that an album with him in the driving seat would improve things, but his last two solo albums are dreadfull,so it doesn't look promising. JPP has no redeeming features whatsoever..

Thanks to this thread, I start playing Honking on Bobo (can I stress that I got it from a coworker?). The Joe Perry sung opener was good, but switched to Alabama Thunderpussy one minute into the first Steven Tyler song.

I listened to Honkin' after reading some reviews, I must say that the reviews all made the album sound better than it actually sounds.

Gritty old obscure blues songs with ultra modern day production. These things don't seem to mix.

Nice try though.

Tylers voice is for sure like nails on a chalkboard. Really in your face. It would be a lot better if they would just back him off. And if things were not just so bright and clear.

I kind of like "Vacation", anything after that is Sofia crappola.

I might have been a little hasty in condemning PV. It's got some pretty solid tracks on it. I fear to (will not) venture any further though.
