Are there any? I have found a scant few from 1980 onwards but was wondering if there are any early-Priest/Maiden etc influenced bands that had releases in the 70s (from Mexico downwards basically).

I don't think there are. I have found El Reloj from Argentina, they were more technical than the usual psych/hard rock but they were prog.

Thanks, I don't think there are any! They didn't really get 'metal' in those countries until quite late, mid 80s.

Closest I've found so far are Riff http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/riff (which had Pappo from Pappo's blues) and V8 http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/v8 but these were still more rock than metal and not started till 1980. Though V8 was supposedly liked by the Sepultua guys when they were kids!

There's a Peruvian band called Tarkus that sometimes get that bumping kinda NWOBHM flow, but from way before, their record's from '72 and I'd assume they're as metallic it gets for that time and place.

Yes, it's not metal, though they had (or tried to have) a metal image

Cool guys, yeah Tarkus, Pax, Pappo's assorted bands and Módulo 1000 were the amongst gruntiest 70s stuff.

My continued investigation leads me to think there was nothing that could be compared to NWOBHM until the mid 80s. El Reloj had some cool metally prog in mid-70s though:
