I've got a carvin mts3200 all tube head that i use that is brutally awesome. its lead channel can suck it (its not that bad i guess, i just never use it), but the clean channel is so loud and boomy! the low end is amazing and it takes pedals so well... it is built like a tank and i think i only paid $300 for it. it gets decent reviews in some places, but is defintely not on anyone's "i need to have that shit" list.

Sansamp character series pedals. We have the Marshall emulator and the Orange emulator in the band and it just makes our lives so much simpler. When the sound is just so bad everywhere like here in India, these things are just what we were looking for.

I like and use a whole bunch of gear that isn't really extremely in desire (some of it is, I guess), but when you put it all together, it looks, feels and sounds great. I think that people should use whatever feels right to them. I like alot of old junk--something like my Farfisa Bravo (E flat key doesn't work in any octave) or maybe something like an old Magnus Chord Organ (kind of like an accordian)....that's the sort of stuff that I peruse the used gear ads for and scoop up right away. I know some guys that collect old Arion and DOD pedals and stuff like that.....alot of that stuff is really good, but it's stayed cheap (aside from some things like maybe the Buzz Box) and can be had for a really good price. If I had the room (and a truck!) i'd totally pick up almost every free organ and piano out of the used ads....organs with weird ass sounds and cheesy beat box rhythms and rotating speakers and whatnot.

Personally, I think that the Ibanez 10 line from the 80's is pretty underrated. Most of those pedals can be had for cheap, but the delays, the overdrives, most of them sound great. I'd got a Ibanez SF10 Swell Flanger with the box and manual for like $60 bucks last year.....I think that the days of finding the 10 series (the TS10 is great, too) are going to be limited.

This isn't my demo, but this is what sold me on the Swell Flanger--it's crazy for psychedelia, there's a couple of sweep notches in the sound that conflict to create a really unique sound.

My main bass is an SX 5-string Jazz. I wanted to try a bunch of different hardware to find out what I liked best, and I figured I'd use a bass with no resale value so I wouldn't feel bad about chopping it to bits. The only original parts left are the body, neck and control plate, and I got my luthier friend to take the horrible fake vintage poly off the neck so it's not really original either. I've sunk a fair bit of money into the project, but still far less than I would have had to spend to get what I wanted from a larger company, and now I have a bass that perfectly suits my needs.

Sounds pretty good too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8m-sbWl34g

Sometimes solid state amps are actually cool. The recent Vox practice amps come to mind. And modeling is sometimes actually useful. There, I said it.

GASP!

seriously though, i use guitar rig sometimes, great for getting ideas down, and i've used it for effects on album's i've worked on.

my current fav cheap gear is the vht special 6 combo i just bought. 10 inch speaker, 12ax7 pre and 6v6 power, 200 bucks, and sounds killer! handwired (in China). great bedroom amp and takes pedals well.

My main ride is a $50 parts tele/esquire. The body is 3 different colors and covered in beer labels with a non original ESP Custom neck. I sold a 70's LP Deluxe and kept this monstrosity. Go figure.

Boss gear is considered uncool by some boutique gear snobs (I reside halfway between common "whatever works" stuff and high end shit), but i'd picked up an old 80's CE-2 chorus a couple of days ago (my favorite gear transaction ever--in the parking lot of a McDonalds) and it's the thickest, deepest chorus i've ever used.

I have a Behringer Tremelo that's actually pretty decent. Far more usable than my Small Stone, anyway, at least it doesn't have a massive volume drop...

I like Boss Pedal gear a lot. I've never had one break on me. I have their Flanger, Phaser and Tuner.

for the drummers...
I bought a set of PAISTE drums a few years ago.. very cheap and they always strike up a conversation, being that nobody (myself included) ever even heard of a Paiste kit.. I love that set!

Squire II Precision Bass a friend gave to me. I think it's late 80's early 90's. I think it's pretty much considered garbage, but I was checking out some of the new Squire Vintage Modified basses that retail for $299 and the Squire II blows doors on that chincy shit.

Maybe it's from being around the corksniffer crowd but lately that Rondo tele-bass has been giving me a hard on.

Also important to remember is that alot of gear that was considered junk, went on to become worth lots of money or highly sought after. The Gibson Les Paul Junior was considered an amateur guitar, but lots of people caught onto the simplicity of it as a good thing and the P90 sound became it's own thing. Ditto for what Cobain did for Mosrites and Mustangs and things like that.

I didn't know Cobain played any Mosrites. The Jags and Mustangs for sure. I know in the early years they/he would go to pawn shops and stuff just to buy cheap guitars to smash up. So, I suppose their could be photos of him playing just about any piece of shit.

All my guitars are kind of cheap, as they are epiphones, but I actually liked the way they played and sounded better than the over priced gibson versions. Go figure...
