I'm a guitar player who has switched to bass. This band is riff based so there's plenty room for creativity I'm a rhythm guy anyway. I have played bass in grungy style bands back in the early 90's and did use my fingers then. This band is much more plodding and thicker sounding. I use a pick now and it really allows me to keep tight tempo. I actually wish I had used a pick many years ago I'd probably never gone to guitar. Any other bass pickers here? It seems to me that down tuned 4/4 riff rock almost demands it yet I see so few "pros" using a pick. |

Depends on the style, but yeah. I do. Took me a few years to figure out I needed a larger pick, or my thumb would ache. |

I saw J Mascis and Mike Watt play J's solo material many many years ago (this is back when they were doing Stooges covers too). During the show, I thought it was weird that Watt was playing with a pick. I asked Watt about it afterwards and he told me that J asked him to play with a pick because he prefers how it sounds. |
