No, I don't mean Overdrive. Here's the deal. I have an old Carvin Valvemaster that I've modded. The dirty channel sounds great but just slightly dark (before I modded it, it was mud, so it cleaned up pretty well). The clean channel is pristine and I love it. I use both channels about the same amount....lots of clean songs and lots of dirty songs. I'd like to get another dirty sound to turn on/off on the fly for the clean channel to have 3 options total. The problem being any dirt box I've used (Metal Muff most recently) is ultra-bright on that clean channel and the "tone" controls on that or any other pedal I've tried is way too bright to play on that channel.

So, basically, I'm looking for a ballsy distortion pedal that isn't a shrieking banshee tone-wise. I'm not boutique millionaire either so price is definitely a consideration. I looked at the MXR Prime Distortion online but haven't tried it yet. Any suggestions?

My guitarist loves this pedal and it sounds huge.

Fulltone Ultimate Octave is probably the best fuzz pedal I´ve ever heard.

Thanks but I'm looking for the more traditional "Distortion" not "fuzz". I already have a Rat pedal for that. Looking more for that crunchy Thrash/Death Metal smooth sound that isn't jagged on the edge, more for power chords chugging than single notes. My Rat sounds killer for the single note fuzzy stuff but not so much for power chords.

Did you listen to the Pharoah sample without the fuzz engaged?

If not, you missed the specific reason I was suggesting that pedal for your needs.

I'd recommend using the MXR Prime Distortion. I got one for $40, and it sounds just like what you're looking for...

I watched the videos and both of those pedals do sound good but not what I'm looking for. I did end up getting a Prime Distortion since they were so cheap and it does what I need it too with no fuss. If I ever decide on an upper scale pedal so be it but for now this lil baby sounds just fine.

The best bass distortion Ive found in a guitar pedal is the "Turbo" mode on my Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer. Im not a scholar on the subject, but guitar pedals seem to work in frequencies that arent really helpful for good bass-guitar sound.

Overall Ive found it challenging enough to get a good clean bass sound without delving into distortion too much.

This video is a bit long, but it might help:

If you can find one, the Hovercraft Ionostrofear Fuzz is pretty sick. It does clean boost, vintage Marshall overdrive, and insane high-gain contemporary doom tones. It’s got a monster low end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKzX-4DTYqU

boss HM-2 or I guess the behringer HM-300

this demo shows why I think this pedal is unique sounding. after the first setting demo with full on dist, he goes thru 3-4 settings with the dist off or nearly off. this is the bizarre tone shaping I have tried to describe in the past. then he gets radical again towards the end.

I love this demo. can you believe all the sounds that pedal makes?

I found a random hm2 vs Hm-300 video. the guy switches quickly and they sound pretty close.

the behringers are not expensive. $25 at sweetwater
