I'm looking for a distortionpedal for my bass. The problem I've always had is that you don't get any low-end. And that's what I'm looking for. A good, heavy distortion that lets me keep the low-end, unlike so, so many bass-distortions.
I have a Big Muff. Great sounding thing, but pretty much only high-end.
Any tips would be appreciated!

Have you tried the black Russian Big Muff pi?

Great bass overdrive, huge low end boost with tone knob all the way down.

You'll lose some high end tho. But dial it back in on the amp if you intend on leaving pedal on all the time, heh

I've been using a Fulltone Bass Drive due to the aforementioned loss of high end.

+1 with Danny G

Fulltone Bass Drive

It takes your sound and distorts it rather than, say, a Boss pedal that adds Boss-sounding distortion to your sound.
Plenty of low end.

Heavy distortion is as far as it'll go, tho—it won't get you into Fuzz Country, but just across the border.

I use the Fulltone Bass Drive. Don't care for Big Muffs on bass, squashes/compresses it too much.

For the 1st bass break on this track I used a Fuzzface:

The second bass break is the Fulltone and Bass Balls.

A lot of people swear by these:

And these:

I find this pedal intriguing:

For fuzz, I like my black Russian Big Muff, but I know exactly what you mean about wanting a lighter overdrive that keeps the bottom end.

I use a Way Huge Pork Loin for my lighter overdrive (which I leave on pretty much all the time, trying to fake the sound of an over-driven tube amp with my solid state head). What I love about the Pork Loin is that it has a clean blend, which I keep up pretty high, so my lows stay present. The blend is key for getting the dirt and keeping the low end, IMO.

What's in a name? a distortion pedal DISTORTS the signal. In the case of bass sound, it usually reduces the clarity/punch of the lower frecuencies.

A solution I like is a wet/dry knob, as a friend of mine who uses a MR Blow Torch pedal. Notice the BLEND knob:

If carrying an extra amp is not a problem, the bi-amp approach is the better way to achieve distortion while keeping the low-punch. I play guitar, but I do so with an octaver pedal.

Gotta love clarity and filth playing together.

I have gone through a load of these: my favourite was probably the Electro Harmonix English Muff'n, though with it being a valve pedal it was more fragile.

I actually find that the Boss ODB3 sounds pretty good when run through another preamp pedal like a Sansamp Bass Driver.

A friend of mine used a Tube Driver. You could not throw it, as it was not as sturdy as a BOSS pedal, and it could not run on bateries.

But it sounded so sweet! organic and microtonally unpredictable (is that redundant?).

I like the green muff for bass. The "bass big muff" that EHX sell at the moment is basically the same but has the dry mix option which is pretty cool. You'll probably find there is TOO much bottom (if there is such a thing).

thirded. This is what our bass player uses. He went through about 10 others before buying this one and has not looked back since. Great pedal.

I'd fully recommend those MXR Blowtorches if you want to keep you bottom end, they take 2 x 9v batteries to get there. I've always had a Boss ODB-3 for overdrive distortion and has always worked wonders, but then the heads I've played through have had no problem providing it. I'm about to try out a Boss HM-2 with my new Peavey Firebass 700, can't wait!

Cheap and effective Boss HM-2. Sounds like a million angry flying roaches.

Hey folks - this is my first post on this forum - i used to be a regular n the SR.com Jam Room - name Lippy.

I use a JHS Low Drive. Hands down my favorite drive/dirt pedal for bass - esp in conjunction with a hybrid amp that gives you some warmth and gain - but doesn't hit the sweet spot. I used it in front of a MarkBass Little Tube 800 through and Orange 4x10 - sounded awesome.

edit ~ oh - right behind this, I use a Keeley modded rat for additional craziness... the Rat stands alone pretty nicely too.

The tone you get varies from amp to amp, have in mind then that the amp is the first thing you need to take care of to get that low-end dist sound.

I have tried big-muffs and fulltone bass pedals some of them were quite satisfying, but when it comes down to distorted sound I prefer to turn up the gain on my orange amp and get that creamy low-end fuzz.

I used pedals, but after buying my new GEORGE HEAD, nothing is better than pure and hot valves distorsion.

Whatever you pick, set it so the audience can hear the difference! I used several different pedals live, and failed to set it up so people could actually hear when I stomped the pedal. When you stomp it, they need to hear it!

Like others have said on this thread: Fulltone Bassdrive. You won't lose the low end like other pedals do.
