Hi guys, looking for a bit of help here. Playing in a band again for first time in years, now playing much heavier stuff and thinking I need to get some new gear. The pedal I have at the moment is a Marshall bluesbreaker 2, looking to replace it with something with a bit more gain. I own one of these - However, due to the really shitty on off switch it is really only useful for recording with. Plus its pretty old so is really noisy! Love the sound of it though, has a 12AX7 tube in it - really versatile pedal. Not looking for full on fuzz thus not asked in that thread, I use my fenders mainly in this new band so looking to keep a bit of bite for the back pickups if I want the option. Budget is about £100 ($160). I thank all you kind and knowledgable gents in advance. |

A Couple Questions: 1) What kind of music are you playing/What kind of sound are you looking for? 2) What are you running for an amp/amps & cabs? I use a few dirt pedals. Things you may want to check out: Catalinbread Supercharged Overdrive Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret Boss DS-1 always had a good distortion, but low output. Analogman does some awesome mods, or you can buy a pre-modded one. (www.buyanalogman.com) Analogman AstroTone Fuzz (Kind of a cross between fuzz & distortion)-you can get some non fuzz tones out of it pretty easily, and it cuts well in a mix. |

Thanks for the reply sir, in answer to your questions - 1) Stoner rock/metal ala Halfway to Gone/House of Broken Promises. 2) JCM 800 2204/JCM 900 4500 with either a 4 x 12 loaded with greenbacks or 2 x 12 and vintage 30s. Strat/tele/SG for guitars. Thanks for the links, have never got on with boss pedals - not sure why. Liking the sound of the Supercharged overdrive pedal you mentioned, sadly only seems to be one retailer stocking Catalinbread in the UK and they don't bloody have that pedal! |

You can probably find an SCOD on Ebay UK. Buy it now/New in the box kind of deal. I love that pedal. Does pretty much anything you want it to do. Also, if you layer another overdrive in front, you can get some really awesome tones! http://cgi.ebay.com/Catalinbread-Super- ... 4155301f1a They will ship it to you. |

Do you do mods? They're fairly easy to do once you have the knowledge. A Boss Blues Driver makes an excellent project, because it cleans up well, but still has tons of gain where it's almost a fuzz at higher gain levels. On a cheap budget, the Marshall Jackhammer is good, because it has lots of gain if needed, plus the bass and treble knobs come in handy.....some pedals don't have a bass knob. A Rat or Turbo Rat is always a great pedal on a budget, too. If you have more cash, the ZVex Box of Rock has a good range of tones. Wampler has a few pedals like the Pinnacle and Plextortion that are very good, if you have a higher budget. The Lovepedal Superlead is great, too, as is the Kalamazoo. I use a Fuchs Valve Job which is great for lower gain to somewhat saturated overdriven/ distorted sounds. |

Been a while since I modded a pedal, could give it a try I guess. My brother has pointed me in direction of a UK company called Blackstar, said he knows a few guys who use them. Anyone hear ever heard of them? Can get this pedal for under my budget, a valve one too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toagqd0508A |

It seems like it has more clarity than most fuzzes, really distortion-like, but still wooly enough to have the looseness of a fuzz. Looks super cool, too! What's the lowdown on the circuit--what's it based on, and what's do the switches do? |

Thanks!! It is based on the BMP circuit , obviously tuned differently. Has some conceptual nods to tonebenders and a modified tone circuit. The switches control the amount of gain and compression. In my blog is a link to a pdf manual I put together with more detail and some graphs showing the frequency responses of different knob settings. |

Sounds like my kinda thing. I think they're $125? What's the availability of them? I'm not sure if I have the cash right now, but probably in the near future--i'm always down for supporting community members that hand build effects/ fuzzes. The circuit/ build quality looks great, and the graphics/ build of the exterior of the pedal is something that i'd be interested in picking up, myself. |

Riffer, you got any idea what the cost of shipping one to the UK would be? As I really love the sound of the pedal, but sadly anything from America seems to cost a bomb in postage - as I never fit in to standard UK postage. Live on an island off the north coast of scotland, can be a pain in the arse... Can't order perfume off amazon, fuckers won't deliver it to here! |

There is no real reason for it, but a lot of companies either refuse to deliver to here or charge a shit lot extra for it. Luckily, my brother lives in Glasgow so can get stuff sent to him and then on to me! Oh and "here" is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkney I'm arguably the most viking on the board! |

Merry christmas guys! I owe my brother and parents a big thank you, I got this for xmas - Hg0yHWRceFw[/youtube} I asked him to try out a Blackstar pedal for me, he was so impressed he bought it and took it home as my Xmas present! I think I still need to get one of riffers pedals though... |
