I don't want to get anything super fancy or more expensive than this... but is there anything else out there around this price that might be better?

Try craigslist. You might find something better for that money... on the other hand, the one you posted a link to will at least have a warranty.

Yeah, that's an idea but I have no idea what to look for or know what a good deal is.

What are you looking to do with it? The modeling on those is pretty feature-packed for the money, but you can get a low-wattage tube amp for the same price that is going to sound better at low volumes.

Something like this:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Vox-AC4TV-4 ... 1446380.gc

Basically, if you are looking for a small amp that can make a bunch of sounds, the one you linked will do you fine. If you are looking for a small amp that does one thing really well, look in to something like the Vox I linked or for $50 more, the new Fender Super Champ.

Similarly, the Orange folks make (made?) a really nice little amp in that price rance that sounded great, the Crush 30R. Another one to check out!

It's for the kid. He already has a mini-Vox and likes it, just wanted to get him something more substantial. I like those little Orange amps but he always gives me a hard time about them. heh.

Go with the one you were looking at in the first place. The kid will love it.

Thanks guys, it seem to be the same answer all around. Now to book some clients so I can pay for it! :)

Can Lippy have it? Where is that guy. Still MIA?

But yeah... for a kid that already likes the mini vox, that's perfect. Plus with all the onboard stuff, it will keep you from having to invest in pedals.

built in effects always worry me.
But, the important thing is that the kid likes it.

For craigslist scouring I recommend looking for a peavey classic 50.
It's tube, and a bigger amp, but great sound, and can usually be found for under $300

Vox seems to do a decent job for multi-effects, as far as multi-effects units go, so their built-in jobs should do the job. This way your boy can tinker away and get an idea of what he might like to invest in in the future.

Yeah, he really digs the different effects on the mini Vox he has now. I think they have these other Vox amps at rock school so he knows those pretty well and likes the effects. Thanks!

Vox is owned by Korg. Korg has been making some decent multi-effect for quite some time now.
It seems like a nice enough amp for his needs. My biggest concern would be that it probably wont hold it's value when he out grows it and wants to trade up. My prediction is that he will pretty quickly too.

Neighbor, he actually doesn't play much through the amp at home but he has started a project with one of his friends and that time is coming. If he continues his progress of course he will want a bigger and better amp all through his lfe, that is inevitable.

The Vox AC4 is a very good amp, awesome actually, but the valvetronix gives you more sounds, effects and stuff and enables you to play and mimic different styles. All that might be cool when you're starting out and don't necessarily know what you want. On the other hand the AC4 would be usable later on (at home & for recording) even when he gets a bigger amp.
