Which EHX big muff pedal suits you best? I'm playing stoner/sludge/doom.

Another question: how many differences are between "classic" big muff and the "little one"?

I'm a big fan of my bass big muff. It's based on the old russian green big muff. I do miss my black big muff pedal but I destroyed the pots on it. I need to get it fixed.

I looked at the LBM but ended up getting the standard US one, happy with it.

"Housed in a compact, die-cast box with smooth corners, The Little Big Muff presents the classic, true-to-heritage, 1970 tone that falls somewhere between the current U.S. Big Muff and the Russian Big Muff. Its long, silky smooth sustain proves that celebrated sound can indeed come in small packages."

there are some youtube videos that I researched before buying mine.

On a similar note, which muffs are good for bass? I know there's an actual bass one, but I've heard that the double's supposed to be pretty sweet too.

I bought LBM, mostly because it is compatible with standars (Boss) 9V adapter.

The Little Big Muff has just a shade more low end and is a little darker, to my ears, at least, compared to the regular NYC reissue one (though not as dark sounding as the Black Russian Muff). I also think that it has a slight bit more compression, so the sustain is a little more evened out. The NYC reissue has a slight bit more of mids/ clarity, but not much more. Essentially they're the same, so for most people, i'd recommend the LBM just because of the smaller size and the regular 9V adapter. Though if you're into modding pedals, the big box NYC Muff is pretty cool, as you can fit tons of potentiometers and toggle switches on the front face, if that's your thing.

My personal favorites are the Green Russian, and the '78 op amp version which is an entirely different circuit, Saint Vitus Used them on a few of their records i believe.

Blackarts tone works LSTR. I use the Pharaoh with one of my amps in my rig and it's awesome. Everyone I've talked to that has the lSTR likes it. Good Muff varient. Check it out.

You can buy a kit from General Guitar Gadgets for real cheap that will let you build any kind of muff you like. They go together real easy if you are even the tiniest bit handy with a soldering iron.

I recommend one of the many Muff versions out there that have either an extra mids control, or even better, the bass and treble controls instead of the single tone knob. You can still dial in the scooped mids vintage Muff sound, then adjust the highs a bit in order to cut through whatever mix you might be dealing with.

If you build your own, the bass/treble mod is butt simple:

Or, here's a presence mod for the Muff:

I had an LBM for a while, but I thought the low end sounded a little flatulent. I tune down to B, and riffs on the lowest string tended to sound "farty". I also have a Black Russian model, which is smoother sounding, and a NYC Reissue, which is a little raspier. All of them are good pedals. But The LBM didn't seem to like B-standard tuning.

If your into building pedals, get a MADBEANPEDALS pcb and build one, you can build any muff version with it just change the right components and bobs your uncle. Or failing that find some who can solder it up for ya.

I love me rams head muff, use it for solos and thick fuzzz riffs.

As others have said they all have their charms. I prefer the black Russian large box version, myself. There's tons of youtube videos of folks playing through all of the different versions.

I found a green Russian Big Muff on the street that sounds great for heavy stuff as well as garage rock. Our bassist uses it now and it sounds killer for that.

I will second the Black Arts stuff... The Pharaoh and LSTR crush the EH stuff.

Earthquaker Devices Hoof brings the goods. It's based on a green Russian Muff, but sounds tidier to my ears. No less fuzzy and warm, just a little more hi-fi. Maybe that makes sense.

The newest version has a shift knob, which basically adjusts the mids. This can help you cut through in a band situation.

I use a Double Muff I got for cheap... And I'm still very happy with it. Quite a nice one.
