I'm working on a solo project of sorts and I want to put together some drums for them, but I do not play drums. I was wondering if there are any good free programs out there for simulating drums and creating beats and whatnot. Anyone bump into any?

I'm using leafDrums2. Downloaded it for free and I'm supposed to pony up $30 usd in x amount of days. Sounds like a bad drum machine, I could search out a better sound group as they exist, but I'm only using it to write/arrange not really to publish music so I don't care about sound quality. Simple as shit to use.

Depending on the recording software you're using, you can also sample kick drums, snares, high-hats, etc from other CDs, create a metronome grid, and drop in the samples to create your own beats. I did a lot of electronica derived from psych/metal/doom back in the late 90s doing this. Used the high-hat opening hits on Metallica's "Leper Messiah" a lot.
