Turns out I love this type of music almost more than Sabbath.

I was curious as to the approach in chords and scales (the tunings are probably something exotic) so I emailed the main guy...

"Hi Geordie,
and sorry for the late reply.

Well, I use some very special tunings on all the RADE tracks and it`s not just drop D.
All strings are tuned way different to achieve this special sound.
But yes, some tracks are mostly in d while tunes as The black tongues of Kali Maa and others are in c.

Actually, the vinyl version is already pressed, I think that Ván and Ajna will announce the release pretty soon!

All the best to you and thanks a lot for your interest,
talk soon mate,
malte

"So he let all three of them gather and
commanded his judgement upon them:
Nine curses and death."
(Sefer ha-Bahir, § 141)"

I drop D tune to achieve a sitar-like drone and I can figure out those half-step flourishes but the chords elude me. You really have to tune each string a certain way (DADGAD?)

Here is a video of them actually playing.

That was some great stuff indeed!

I love the use of those microtones as well.

Been thinking of trying to get hold of one of these.

Most Arabic music is based on a series of scales called "Maqams". Some will work easily on guitar while others will require some clever bending. Check out this site: http://www.maqamworld.com

^ Thanks! I'll check that out. I didn't know you could drop tune to C# on an acoustic.

Also, I was interested in these small 10 string (2 sets of five) 'Cuatro Puertorriqueno' guitars.

I wouldn't be interested in the music it was created for - Latin folk.

What else could you do with this instrument? I would want to play exotic Byzantine, Arabic and Phrygian pieces. The Cuatro has these tunings.

G4 |-------- .011 gauge
G4 |-------- .011 gauge
D4 |-------- .014 gauge

A3 |-------- .023 gauge

B2 |-------- .041 gauge
B3 |-------- .023 gauge
