Occasionally throughout these 25 minutes, you'll notice a guitar line that radiates with what might seem like hope, or a pause between the colossal thunder-drums that suggests some safe harbor. But don't be fooled: Just as pop bands sometimes add a little darkness to their music to make the hooks seem that much brighter, Portland, Ore., terror squad Aldebaran sometimes leaks a little radiance into the proceedings only to make the darkness that much easier to see.

The finest cut from one of the most relentless slabs of funeral doom misery in recent memory, "Forever in the Dream of Death" leans on sinister whispers, unholy growls and a slow march toward oblivion. As the marathon inches toward its finale, the words "crowning the Earth in a blackened flame" emerge so slowly and lowly that they're nearly inaudible; it's an apt image and presentation for a band so good at acknowledging-- and then eliminating-- all points of light.
