From beginning to end every track is a winner. The influences are obviously there (Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash, Judas Priest et al.), but this is no cheap rip-off. There is a voice here that is unequivocally present and very much their own. The sophomore effort from England’s Wytch Hazel entitled ‘Sojourn’, is a sincere and honest expression of their religious Protestant beliefs which they manage to convey without proselytizing or invoking the “J” word. It’s clever and stands on equal footing in a Heavy Metal community littered with demonic imagery.
This might be the only time I didn’t listen to streaming data samples of a future release first. I waited until the vinyl arrived in the mail and created a full-on listening experience, and from the moment the needle touched the platter I was immediately rewarded. I highly recommend this treasure. It is a magical sojourn to be played on rainy nights with a fine Ale [coloured vinyl] and, hopefully, in the company of good people.
Cheers!
