I'm a Down fan. I can admit, I am on THAT side of the fence. So naturally, I dig this.
I understand the bad rap Phil gets. He's a character for sure. But he can be, he's a frontman. Ala David Lee Roth or some shit. I find him funny, entertaining if nothing else. He clearly doesn't take shit too seriously, which can't be said for some of his detractors.
And I can see how some of their stuff gets the "Meathead" stamp.
Its fuckin rock n roll to me. Lets sit around, get high, throw back a few, pound our fists and nod our heads.
It sure as fuck doesn't hurt there's the huge Sabbath influence (Phil's Electric Funeral croon and some of the guitar tones on this one) and some Trouble/Witchfinder General/80's doom-worship (and really, was that stuff so serious or "deep"? No, it's just about "Sabb-ing out")
And I fucking love that Kirk Windstein and Pepper Keenan are playing guitar together. I'm a big fan of both their respective other bands. Listening to Down and picturing Pepper riffing away and Kirk's snarled nodding is just fuckin fun.
Speaking of Pepper, yes, the C.o.C. albums with him are great. Some are classic. But I could go for a few more 3-piece albums. That self-titled album is great. I don't doubt he'll be back eventually.
I digress.
We are not going to get another NOLA. Just like we will never get another Master of Puppets, or Master of Reality, or Holy Mountain, etc, etc. And that's fine with me.
Down can go the way of Motorhead or Crowbar and just keep rockin. No need for breaking new ground. Originality is overrated.

I agree. I dig the ep and like the brevity of it.
All 6 tunes are solid.

At risk of thread hi-jacking, CoC is in the studio already again as a 3 piece (see their fb page for updates) so they're striking again while the iron is hot. S/T ruled imo (one of the year's best) and I'm equally stoked for this one.

Maybe Pepper eventually returns, but it appears they're fine without him. I love both versions and a 3rd........with the Blind lineup.

I heard about this. Awesome fuckin news.

Back on the Down track,
any songs on the EP jumping out at you more than the others?
Witchtripper is just fuckin wicked. And I'm really diggin The Curse is A Lie, especially that nice head-noddin riff around 2:44.

This cd has grown on me this week ALOT. I think what I like most is that it's so short, 6 GOOD songs grouped together without 4 or 5 meh ones in between. I hope they continue on the EP kick with the next batch of songs too, it will be interesting in what tunes make the cut for Down V

The Sab boogie of This Work is Timeless is the one i've gone back to but really the ep is strong. I agree with the idea of it. Cohesive no filler.

I fucking love it. Witchtripper is maybe my least favourite, but I don't skip it by any means. I think Open Coffins is my favourite cut off the EP, it just fucking smokes anything in it's path.

The guitar tones are something else, too. Heavy. Ass. Fuck.
