"Possessed by the Rise of Magik" is Ramesses' darkest album. It is unrelenting in its bleakness, and never is that mood forced or contrived. There are no clips from horror movies, no growls, no demonic vocals, just one song after the other that hits the right note of black. This isn't schtick. The grim pit of emotion the band draws from for this release is genuine. It's the album I imagine would be spinning at Thulsa Doom's crazy orgy party at the end of "Conan the Barbarian." Those naked bodies fucking and eating people-soup while men turn into giant snakes around them could easily have been listening to these songs. "No remorse, no tears of joy." It's hypnotic and black, and for me a step forward for Ramesses

I've read several reviews that found "Possessed . . ." a significant departure from Ramesses' previous releases, which opinions seem to be based on the "clean" vocal approach taken throughout this release. I don't agree. The vocals are familiar and have been used on previous Ramesses material, just not for an entire song or album. Setting aside the vocals, the musical aesthetic is the same, though it is a progression. Nothing revolutionary, just the band evolving. This is essential listening for any fan of Ramesses.
