Elder - Dead Roots Stirring (unmastered version)
Unreleased
Release date: TBA

Elder`s debut was notable not just because it was oh so very good but because the three players were oh so very young. Unless you saw them live, you`d never guess that the intricate and involved arrangements on Elder were the work of a group not old enough to drink legally.

Now that they`re able to make use of complimentary drink tickets, what`s changed? Elder`s sophomore release has the same flair for composition, but with the added bonus of having gelled more as a band. The difference is that the group has pulled away from an overt doom sound and has incorporated more psychedelic rock, ala Colour Haze and 35007.

If the draw of Elder was Big Riffs like in "Riddle of Steel Part 1" and the gruff vocals that accompanied them, you might as well stop reading and go back to your business, because Dead Roots Stirring doesn`t offer much in that vein. But if you liked those moments where the band stretched out on a cosmic trip, as in "White Walls" and the just-as-awesome-as-the-Big-Riff middle part of "Riddle of Steel Part 1," then you`ll find Dead Roots Stirring a sonic feast. They`re not all-out progressive, but each of the five tracks are closer to ten minutes than they are five. And rather than follow a straight line from beginning to end, tracks like "Gemini," the title track, and the instrumental "III" weave and twist upwards, growing organically and unhindered by typical structure.

As I mentioned, vocalist/guitarist Nick DiSalvo eschews the guttural roars for more legitimate singing this time around, and it`s a better fit for what they`re dishing out, especially on closer "Knot." "Ghost Head" from their debut was an island of Fu Manchu in a sea of Electric Wizard, and "Knot" is its kindred spirit. It`s peppier than the other songs, the most rock-like of the lot. It would be the most conventional as well, except that they once again veer off on an engrossing instrumental tangent, a magic carpet ride through the astral plane. That segment winds up justifying the song`s four seconds shy of twelve minutes running time.

I will say that at times the band overreaches with their excesses. "The End" could`ve been trimmed down by a couple of minutes and as much as I love "Gemini," it still sounds like it has at least two endings tacked on to it. Neither of those faults negatively influenced my opinion of Dead Roots Stirring and you better believe that when it`s officially released, I`ll be among the first to heartily recommend it. Elder`s shown no signs of growing pains here.

- John Pegoraro

I loved the 35007-isms on the debut, they juxtaposed so well with the brutal bits, I am really really hanging out to hear this...

A lot more of that going on with this one, a lot of Colour Haze influence as well.

No real brutal bits anymore, but I'm thinking most won't miss them, considering how well they deliver the psych and the groove...

Just heard their debut, I didn't care for the first three songs but I loved the 2nd half of the album. I'd like to see how this act has grown over they years, especially now that they have hair on their balls.

i saw the drummer, matt, the other night at wino/scott kelly. he said the album should be out on meteorcity in the late spring/early summer. also, they will play again once nick gets back from germany, this is just a prolonged hiatus that they're on.

For those who haven't heard their pre-debut album shit, I'm flipping on Black Midnight. Possibly still my favourite Elder song

Any more news on this?

I think i have listened to Gemini about 20 times this weekend. It's freaky hearing guys this young sound like old-hands. Nick DiSalvo's feel and echo etc on those spacey bits is just out of this world, new Dave Gilmour?

This is such a good split. I'm more partial to 1162, but all 4 Elder songs are excellent despite the rough production. Good luck finding a physical copy. The label offered a free download at one point, maybe still does.

I'm a big fan of "gruff" vocals, and Elder delivers Iron Monkey-esque bellows on the split -- far more extreme than on their debut. If the brutality is further diminished on Dead Roots Stirring, then the Elder on the split must be a dim resemblance of the Elder now. Oh well, maybe I won't spin the new one when I'm needing a musical kidney-punch, but I'm such a huge fan of these guys, I can't wait to hear the new material whatever direction their inspiration has taken them.

Oh yeah, Dead Roots Stirring sounds nothing like that original split material.

I have an actual cassette copy of the four songs from that split. Not sure how many were pressed, or how much that would even go for, but I'd be willing to part with it - I don't generally play tapes. Email me at: black.pyramid@yahoo.com if you're interested in it.

This is great stuff. Dug their first record but their new one blows it out of the water.

I'm glad people are digging on this record, I realized as soon as I heard it that it was a change of pace for them, but all worked out well if the peep are on board.

Got my official copy last week, I'm liking the new layout that Meteorcity is using for the Eco-packs.

I'm very stoked to hear this. I hope it comes early next week (ATIH usually takes a couple of weeks to reach me).
