Grifter fires on all cylinders on their new self-titled album. Full of hooky boogie rock, soulful and sincere vocals, and boasting a mammoth sounding production. Having a couple EP's under their belt, the time is right to finally show the world that Grifter means business, with their first full length album.

Right from the get-go, this UK based trio comes out swinging, and pummels your ear hole with a barrage of bluesy riffs and booty shaking time signatures. Taking the usual influences of bands like KISS, AC/DC and Motörhead and brewing them up with the more modern soundings of Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity, is really nothing new you might be thinking, but these guys do it better and with more finesse then most of the bands out there.

Sounding dirty and raucous, this is the perfect soundtrack to a night of debauchery. I can imagine walking into any random strip club with this blasting out of the speakers or just chillin' with some friends at a bbq. Either way you slice it, this is party music and has that certain something that will keep you coming back for repeat listens. Thanks to the fine folks over at Ripple Music for stamping this to plastic. Look for an October 4th release for this album of sonic majesty, both digitally and on CD. Cheers!

"UK-based Grifter unleash their first full length album under the Ripple Music banner later this summer. This self-titled forty-plus minute barrage of hard and heavy, gritty-biker blues rock owes as much to the classic sounds of AC/DC and Motörhead as it does the more modern soundings of Soundgarden and Clutch. After forming in 2003, this trio of 70's loving hard rockers have delivered heaping loads of heavy rock n' roll to music lovers across the British Isles, and now, they're bringing their high octane, Guinness fueled sound to the rest of the world!"

UK's Grifter have previously released a pair as EPs and a demo, but now we get to check out what they can do with a full length effort. Opener "Good day for bad news" is a southern-fried sounding thumper wrapped around a laid back groove. After that the gems just keep coming. "Alabama Hotpocket" is just dripping with fuzzed out glory. "Asshole parade" has some basic but monstrous drop beats guiding the march on this instantly likable track. After that we get even more tracks that hit like sledgehammers. Grifter are masters of getting a lot out of simple riffs and rhythms. They obviously realized that a little is enough if you have enough soul and know to maintain control. They tap into what really makes fuzzed out stoner rock move and that's just focusing on a riff and building from there. Nothing face, but they sure make it sound good and suck you in for the ride. The only track I couldn't get into was "Bean". It was okay, but didn't quite have the sparks that the other songs possessed. This is definitely one of those albums that you want to have ready to play when you get out of work or school or wherever and just crank it up and sit back and enjoy.

This one from www.dangerdog.com

Grifter is a colloquial name for a person who, after gaining your trust, steals your money or property through illicit means. A better known title is 'con' artist. Conversely, England's Grifter will gain your confidence with their skill and then deliver the goods: heavy groove-laden rock. This power trio channels the heaviness of early masters like Black Sabbath, and also contemporaries such as Clutch and Kyuss. Their heavy rock may blow out a woofer or two if played too loud, but you'll likely be too busy tapping your toes or grinning from ear to ear to notice.

One reason to smile, and investigate, is Grifter's clever song titles. These pique your imagination, and maybe wish you had a lyric sheet (or perhaps not): Alabama Hotpocket, Asshole Parade, Bucktooth Woman, and Piss and Gas. Fundamentally, Grifter let's the music do most of the talking. Heavy, melodic, and quite catchy mark the bluesy Good Day for Bad News or the southern-fried feel of Alabama Hotpocket. Strip Club, Bucktooth Woman, and the lyrically clever Unwelcome guest pump the rock groove. Grifter quite impressive when many of these elements appear in the same arrangement like Piss and Gas, a heavy song with variant tempo changes to mix things up. Sometimes, on the downside, it simple heavy rock with average results as on Young Blood, Old Veins or Bean.

Nevertheless, there's much to enjoy here, not only in the songs but also the musicianship and production. Heavy doesn't mean a wall stone; the sound is vibrant drawing out it each musician and his instrument. Listen to Preacher and the Devil for a representative example of this, especially the bass line.

England's Grifter delivers some clever and entertaining heavy rock on their first full-length album. It's not to be missed. Recommended.

One from the Soda Shop

To say I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time would be an understatement. Ever since I discovered Grifter a few years back I’ve been hooked. The band has previously released 2 EPs and a demo which were good. Now, for their first full length, Grifter comes at you swinging like a heavyweight champion full of jabs and riff-a-licious uppercuts.

11 track Ripple Music self-titled debut from UK’s favorite frolicking bad boys, Grifter. Blistering high octane rock n’ roll performed for the gritty tattooed biker in all of us. Features the uncompromising “Good Day For Bad News”, the sultry “Strip Club”, and the acoustic-tinged heavy blues burner, “Gone Blues”.
The album opens with the track “Good Day For Bad News” (listen and download below). “Alabama Hotocket” is a slow and swaggering number. “Asshole Parade” picks it up a notch. “Strip Club” is a song about, well, the title speaks for itself. This song is destined be a mainstay in strip clubs for as long as the women still dance in them. “Young Blood, Old Veins” and “Bucktooth Woman” are some fun and groovy songs. “Preacher And The Devil” is a great stoner track which takes come cues from Clutch’s sound. “Bean” is a straight up and simple rock number with some witty lyrics. “Piss and Gas” is also witty, sometimes a little on the slower side and at times, sounds a bit doom like but fits well. “Unwelcome Gas” hits close to home. Reminds me of my unwelcomed guest. Perhaps this song was written about him. “Gone Blues” closes out the album on a much softer note then the rest of the album. It’s an acoustic number that’s mellow and easy on the ears.

This is going to be a great album to have in the collection. Anyone with love and passion for hard rock is going to enjoy this. I’m always amazed at how a Grifter songs comes out as the guys really seem to enjoy making music and it shows in the end product. The songs are all upbeat and they have the certain something that I can’t quite think of at the moment. I’ve never been disappointed with them. Yu’ll be able to preorder the album soon for Ripple-Music. The album hits October 4th.

Grifter - 'Grifter' (ripple music) 4.5/5

OK, first up, PLEASE do NOT confuse this outfit with a rather limp indie shoegaze band from the states of similar name. If you want angst ridden teeny post rock walk away now and save yourself a whole world of pain and possible ear damage... If however you want to hear some down and dirty good old biker rock from Plymouth in the UK, then stick around, cos I think you'll like.

Formed by a group of veterans from the Plymouth area rock scene, Grifter have been around since 2003 and have chalked up a long list of self released eps that have won them friends and rave reviews all over the UK, and now they are hitting us with their first full length album. And worra album it is; dripping classic hard rock sensibilities from first to last this album just rocks. There's the smattering of all the greats in Grifters balls out rock approach; ZZ Top, AC/DC, Juicy Lucy... even bits of some of those great but forgotten NWOBHM outfits like Split Beaver, Handsome Beasts and After Dark. Basically this right up my musical alley. It ain't original, it ain't cleaver, it is just rock and roll with a capital RAWK.

There's 11 tracks here, and each one is a stomping greasy down and dirty biker bash floor filler, and with titles like Asshole Parade, Strip Club, Piss And Gas et al. you know EXACTLY where these guys are coming from; and in a time when too many rock bands are trying to be over cleaver and too flash for their own good Grifter are a breath of fresh air.

Highlights? well the album is one long highlight, but I will confess the damnation boogie of Young Blood Old Veins with its message of keep on rockin' strikes a particular chord with this aging old rocker 'THE CLOCK'S TICKING - BUT I'M NOT LISTENING..' Hell yeah!!

Buy this album, and play it LOUD!

For fans of - Dumpy's Rusty Nuts, Handsome Beasts, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo, AC/DC, ZZ top etc

And another from metal Minute

I'm automatically going to hand a band that pounds Guinness a gimme point. Guinness drinkers (at least in the United States) run a gauntlet of shriveled-up faces and irksome groans and moans from tamed-down lager lovers--you know who you are, fukkos. Guinness, not for everyone.

Grifter hails from Plymouth in the UK. Obviously not the punk outfit of the same name, nor Grifters, which had their run in the early nineties, this Grifter is more about skillet rawk in the vein of Clutch, Scissorfight and the drop-kicked Southern boogie metal vibe that's been more than fashionable in the American underground these days. Let's add Ripple Music's own Stone Axe, while we're being topical here. Better yet, this Grifter loves Guinness. In other words, these dudes are no pussies.

As Bad Company and Foghat learned ages ago, there's heaps of power to be cultivated by studying American delta blues and the manuals of Skynard and Allman. Two of the mightiest UK heavy rock acts who could (and do, if you gauge the average classic rock listener) pass off as American, Bad Company and Foghat are anamolies. In their own fashion, Grifter could likewise pass off as an American piss rock band. Their low-key, though booming cadence carries the subliminal wafts of diesel, garbage, used condoms and spilled booze--in this case, Guinness. All of that is being complimentary.

Consider songs such as "Asshole Parade," "Strip Club," "Piss and Gas," "Bucktooth Woman" and "Good Day For Bad News." It's not just the titles of these grimy cuts; it's the attitude backing them up. You really do flop into this album thinking another Neil Fallon side project (i.e. The Company Band) has cropped up. Guitarist/vocalist Ollie Stygall really nails Fallon's sweltering pipes to a tee all over this album. If "Young Blood, Old Veins" isn't a quantified Clutch outtake, then there's seldom few songs deserving of the honor.

The longer Grifter grinds on, the more you feel there's a Jam Room 2 Clutch never bothered to release. However, instead of trying to match Tim Sult and Dan Maines by the decibel, Grifter opts for a driftier slide and keeps it all on the low end. Stripped down, absolutely, and it's why "Bucktooth Woman" shakes a rowdy tail feather as much as you're forced to laugh at Grifter's huckleberry muse.

"Preacher and the Devil" carries a well-familiar note spiral you've heard from Sabbath to Deep Purple to ZZ Top to Jane's Addiction, but Grifter ends up throwing in a bit of their own jam into the mix with a yowling though easyriding solo from Stygall and a bare bones bass line that carries into the last chugging verse and chorus. Also, have fun with the bottleneck swerves and "aroooo" choruses on the album's swampy closer, "Gone Blues."

"Alabama Hotpocket, "Bean," "Welcome Guest" and "Asshole Parade" are all crock pot ditties that are more than welcome in today's edition of the fuzz rawk cookbook. Cool to see some of the servers hail from parts outside of Baton Rouge, Savannah and Charleston. A point to Grifter for the Guinness. Three more for delivering a chunky through settled slab of amp restraint that nevertheless rocks hard.

Like Guinness, not for everyone. We don't want those people around, anyway.

Rating: ****

Killer review from www.welovemetal.com

I covered GRIFTER briefly on the HEAVY RIPPLES compilation earlier in the week and was very impressed with their party time look at modernized 70s classic rock. Having formed in 2003 the band is heavily influenced by the cross section of acts and sounds including AC/DC, MOTORHEAD, CLUTCH, and even SOUNDGARDEN. Having briefly covered the dirty biker rock of GRIFTER in the past let’s get to their self-titled offering.

Before we take a look at the first of the few songs off the album I want to cover; as you read always keep in the back of your mind that GRIFTER is a band that has a sound that deserves to be heard in a live setting. The recording and production is great, but I personally feel seeing these guys live would be the ultimate GRIFTER experience because their music and lyrics give a definite party atmosphere.

We are going to start with GOODDAY FOR BAD NEWS and its grove that is soaked in the feel of the 70s. The vocals are slightly restrained early on, but open up in the chorus and as I said before: dude can sing. With the vocals getting bigger the guitar is allowed to fill in the back and boost the overall sound. With every strum you can hear the hard rock that started the metal we listen to today.

More after the warp:

ASSHOLE PARADE is next for its massive percussion and awesome song title. This is a very bluesy song that is best described as muddy and dirty. The drum work holds everything together and the line “come on everybody” heading into the chorus will having you singing along before you realize you’re doing it.

GRIFTER stays away from the instant hook for a more methodical pacing in YOUNG BLOOD OLD VEINS. With that being said the drums bring the song up to a level of sound I didn’t expect after the first bit. I brought this one up because it might not be the flashiest song GRIFTER has, but it’s a really good rock and roll song. Sometimes that’s all you need.

BUCKTOOTH WOMEN is another of my favourite titles and the blues are brought to your ears with some clapping and solitary guitar work. Heavy drum work brings the full instrumental arrangement in. I loved this song from start to finish and just seeing the title had me singing it in my head. This track has been blasted a lot in my car lately.

We see some intensity from the band in STRIP CLUB. The more rapid fire vocal pattern shows the boys know how to be hard and heavy. Although the instruments seem laid back at times STRIP CLUB is a really fun song with stellar lyrics.

GONE BLUES is a different side to GRIFTER with its acoustic opening. This was a great choice as it shows some chops in the music that could get lost in the party atmosphere. The song writing shines and you have to think this would be a great way for a live show to pause and give the crowd a chance to get to know the band and how musically talented they are.

Overall this is one of the best hard rock albums from top to bottom that I have listened to this year. The bluesy biker rock is exactly what I need on a hot day when I’m driving home to a beer and a weekend off. Pick up GRIFTER, grab a beer, flip some porn, and get your rock on!

8.5 OUT OF 10 HORNS

Pretty decent review from Doommantia

After creating a buzz about their ability through a couple of excellent Ep's and a long list of great live shows, Grifter are finally releasing their much awaited self titled début. While maybe not exactly as ground breaking as the word of mouth was making it out to be, the album is definitely a little triumph. Th guys do what they're good at doing: Riff Oriented Rock with a touch of classic grit that owes in equal measure to the grooves of early Clutch, the modern heavy melodies of grittier grunge (think of Soundgarden in their golden age), as it does to the grittier sounds of classic hard rock such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath or even Motorhead. Simply put, Grifter write heavy boogie rock tunes, with saturated guitars and hitting hooks.

The british power trio doesn't create anything particularly outstanding, but the tunes do work. They have a really heartfelt vibe and a no-prisoners approach that makes the whole album refreshingly energetic. Even when the riffs or melodies are something that has been done before, tha band still puts enough of a confident kick into it, to guarantee that it still makes you rock out and bang your head. That is the best way to enjoy the record: play it loud, don't expect a masterpiece (which it isn't or aims to be), and let the rocking assault melt the ears. Grifter are genuine and have skills, they deliver good songs and they have the attitude. I hope they become bigger and deliver bigger stuff, which I'm really sure they have in them.
