Super-show at The Ottobar in Baltimore.

Opening act Fortress kicked off to a thin crowd around 6:30 and immediately had a technical problem, the bass guitar evidently crapped out so the guitarist motioned for the bassist to grab his spare guitar and they did the rest of the set (which was practically the whole set) with two guitars. Gotta give them credit for not completely falling apart at that point. They sounded cool, a mix between Elder-style trio doom with some harshness in the vocals.

Next up was Fuck You Pay Me, from Cleveland who played a highly entertaining set of classic punk rock, good humored and tight. The singer, a veteran of several previous acts including Gordon Solie Motherfuckers, ran around the stage and into the crowd getting people to sing along. Some good-natured moshing occurred and the set was enjoyable, this band had their shit together and rocked hard.

Then long-standing Maryland stalwarts Misery Index played a tight set of their no-nonsense metal, blasting away with the skill their veteran status has afforded them. Good set.

Saint Vitus was billed to play this gig but cancelled and was replaced the week of the show by the newly-formed COC- Blind. Despite some narrow-minded fans demanding the presence of Pepper Keenan, he is not involved in this lineup, which is helmed by Reed Mullin on drums and 'Blind' vocalist Karl Agell. One fan began heckling at this point, calling for "Eyehategod", prompting Karl to reply "Eyehateyou!" Funny, and next thing you know security kicks the heckler out of the show to the cheers of the remaining crowd! The band contained at least one member of Leadfoot, and they played a meaty set of burly heavy rock jams with a southern feel which went over really well with this crowd who by their presence at this mixed bill were ready for anything. Karl kicked ass on vocals, Reed was mighty on drums and the and the band sounded really good. For the last song they invited Kim from GWAR (AKA Vulvatron) for a guest vocal. COC- Blind definitely threw down.

Then Cro-Mags took the stage, they sounded really good and the mosh pit kept going in a good- natured manner. I'm thinking this show was so costly that it kept away most of the meatheads and troublemakers, resulting in a happy crowd all around. John Joseph hopped about the stage as is his wont, and they played their segment of Bad Brains numbers in the middle of the set. Excellent set.

Lastly headliners Eyehategod took the stage for a 75 minute set of ferocious playing. Although they are a band commonly reputed to be sloppy/loose, they've been touring hard and are at the moment utterly incredible and hard-hitting. The new drummer almost seems to be leading the band and is totally on point. I love watching the endlessly-patient expression on Brian Patton's face while he waits for Mike and Jimmy to get ready/tune up/stop talking. At the point when the songs get going, they sound massive. Although Saint Vitus did not perform, Wino was whooping it up in the crowd and got a hearty introduction from the stage after hurling a drink at Mike Williams, who couldn't be mad once he found out who the perpetrator was. Awesome set and good times from Eyehategod tonight.

This was a great showcase at a killer club of a variety of bands playing punk, metal and hardcore and doom which all complemented one another, topped off appropriately by the currently fearsome masters of heavy sound Eyehategod. A Sunday evening very well spent...
