You know, some people are like “Rock is dead, there are no good rock bands anymore, Skrillex is the new Blue Cheer”, blah blah blah. Whatever. These people do not know anything. Rock is fine, especially of the harder variety.

Rozamov started off this show by blasting the audience with volume and riffs. There were some vocals as well, actually quite a lot of them, but they were pretty much drowned out by the guitars, which was fine, because the riffs killed. You could hear the vocals but you couldn’t quite make out every single word that was being yelled at you, which again is fine, because I’m drunk and not really taking advice right now from anyone, least of all the guy in the black wifebeater playing the flying V. He doesn’t know anything.

Infernal Overdrive, one of the current marquee acts on venerable underground drug rock record label Small Stone Records, showed up and put on a workshop of how to write music like Bad Company back when Paul Rodgers was a singer of some renown. The guitars ripped, the drumming was solid and the bass player added his two cents when the guitarists were fucking around, showing each other what new scales they learned that particular week and how cool it sounded when they played them together, which was really fucking cool.

I ducked downstairs at this point and came upon Automatic Death Pill blasting the basement audience with volume, Volume, VOLUME. Just a crushing sound. Imagine Buzzoven making out with Eyehategod while Electric Wizard takes pictures on their fucking phone. Yeah, that good. Go see them or be a loser.

Back upstairs, Cult 45 rocked the hell out of the crowd, unfurling an aboslutely perfect cover of “Electric Eye” by the one and only Judas Priest. This band rocks and doesn’t fuck around at all. Tai Heatley’s voice soars over the foundation laid by the band, elevating the audience to a higher plane of rock.

Cortez closed out the night by just unleashing a set of heavy fucking rock in the vein of Unida. That’s really the best comparison I can even possibly make, honestly. It’s on that level. If people don’t want to acknowledge it, it’s their loss. These tunes are rock solid, and the band delivering them is top notch. Heavy melodic riff rock at its absolute finest. Listen or be a dolt, it’s up to you. Yeah, heavy rock is fine. Nothing to fucking worry about here.

Great review. Been meaning to check out Cortez for some time. Will do. And anyone that can pull off Electric Eye, and be legit about it, is tops in my book.

CORTEZ ROCKS!

Saw Cult 45 do a great cover of UFO's "Can You Roll Her" last year. MINT!

Cortez are solid. They've really solidified into a tight, hard-rocking band that more people should be aware of. They remind me of Unida a lot, Matt's vocals definitely remind of John Garcia, and the riffs and grooves are huge. Good stuff.
