Goddamned amazing. Several out of the body experiences during the course of their show. How lucky am I that get to see these guys and Neurosis within ten days of each other? Anyway, my brain got rejiggered a few times watching this show. Cannot do much more description, my new phone sucks to type on.

Thanks for coming back Michael Gira! Also Minneapolis rules! I saw my second favorite Weedeater show last night as well, so fuck yeah. Shout out to jhopkins who had thee fucking Weedeater sound locked the fuck down. Also, Bison BC.

Two (cheap) reviews for the price of one.

My ears are still ringing from the show last night in Milwaukee. Somehow Swans got more loud. I liked the 2010 tour better though.

Hmm, I thought you didn't care much for Weedeater?

My bandmate saw Swans in Nashville and he's been giddy ever since..."best show ever!" stuff, and he's seen hundreds...

hmmm. I imagine that was closer to what I saw in February of this year in Portland. I thought this Minneapolis show was much more powerful. That the February show had more a "songy" bent to it while the September show was pretty much pure sonic exploration. But yeah, seeing Neurosis and these guys within a few days of each other will completely ruin a lot of other live music for you.

Now that I'm home and settled into somewhat normalcy, here are a few crappy cell phone pics I snapped:

That describes what I saw last night. Utterly punishing 2 hour set filled with crushing heaviness and repetition and very few songs. Definitely not what I expected and it pushed my limits in a way last year's shows did not. Incredible stuff, gotta admire Gira for continuing to reinvent the Swans sound. No old songs this time at all. He insisted this new incarnation of Swans wasn't a reunion and last night I understood why.

Saw them a few weeks back at the decent Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, Swans played in the opera hall of the performing arts center downtown. I've never listened to much Swans for no real reason and came in to the opera hall while Bishop was on and sat on the back row. I stayed there for Swans which was an intense performance but I wasn't properly drawn into it due to my own circumstances. After the better part of an hour people started leaving, presumably to go catch Earth who was playing at King's Barcade a few blocks away. That had been my plan too so I split after the first half of Swans. This was ill-advised however cuz when I got to King's to see Earth the place was at capacity with a long line. I went and saw Barn Owl at The Hive instead, that was good guitar-duo drone.

Since everybody kept raving about the Swans shows, I knew I had fucked up. Went to see them again at ATP in Asbury Park last Saturday and that was the payoff- totally over-the-top performance, Gira looked even more determined to lose his shit after the venue folks kept coming up to say that people couldn't stand in the front or the aisles. Gira called the crowd 'pussies' and demanded people come to the front again, only to get the ushers herding everyone back again. I only dipped out of the 2 hour set to see a bit of Ultramagnetic MCs with Kool Keith, but after 15 minutes of that came back to ride out the end of Swans. Very heavy shit, can't see anyone, even a casual fan like myself, being disappointed with their show. I'm glad I made the effort to give it more attention that the first time.
