Good times! Easily the best show I've seen this year!

I showed up to the theater about 30 minutes before the start and run into Mike S. standing in front of the entrance. We exchange pleasantries, it has been since their show in February since I've seen him/YOB. It is very rad/inspiring to watch him interact with the all the very young kids/fans who approach him. It is very easy to root for a good soul like Mike to succeed.

I get in basically in time to see Akimbo get started. They were pretty boring to me. Overall, pretty sloppy. Maybe not for the bar band level, but compared to what came after them, yeah, they were sloppy. They need to make up their mind whether they're a punk rock or stoner rock band and just go with it.

YOB were next! Cool set. It was basically 'Catharsis', which hadn't been played in many, many years! It was a nice flashback, but I would have preferred to hear some new shit, which totally rules imo. Mike spent a better part of a month playing that though, so I guess I can see why he chose to focus on old school stuff here.

Portland's own Grails were next. I love this band and it had been FOUR years since I've seen them! They just don't seem to play shows around here. I think I missed one local show they played in that four year span. Buy anyway, they were so great. It's like mix of Ennio Morricone and Pink Floyd. The keyboard/organist guy they have is incredible. As younger guys I wish they were a bit more than a "boutique" experience for us PDXers, as it really has to take them a good amount of time to put together the show they do put together. Some of the show was weird/long-winded, but the good stuff really hit the spot for me.

Neurosis are pretty much the best live band you'll ever see and tonight continued this streak. They came storming out of the fucking gate opening with "Locust Star", "Given to the Rising" and "End of Harvest". Really awesome and a great way to open the show. This show was sold out and I spoke to a lot of people who said it was their first Neurosis show, so I'm pretty sure most of them ended up converts by the end of the night. Along the way, Neurosis played a couple of tunes off the last album, "Belief" off Times of Grace and two brand new tunes, one of which was totally off the hook. This new album is going to be rad! Killer energy and riffs! A more Killing Joke sort of thing. They ended with "Through Silver in Blood", which really displays them at their most cavemen mode. When they started setting up the drums for this, Matt Jacobson came around me and I had to fist bump the dude. I was like "you put this album out dude" and he was like "oh, I was just lucky". haha, typical Matt.

Anyway, it was a completely crushing show. Seeing YOB, Grails or Neurosis by themselves would be better than anything anyone else could expect to see in a year.

Totally killer show. Totally worth dealing with the Roseland lameness.

Thanks for the review.

Much as I love the new Yob album, I love that they spent most of a supporting slot at a festival set playing such a slow, obscure number even more.

First time seeing the Grails, sure hope its not the last.

Loved the new Neurosis songs.

Loved that this show happened.

Neurosis playing new material is awesome news. Thanks for posting this review.

Looking for YouTube clips from the show in 3... 2... 1....

As far as live performances go, you can't ask for anything heavier than Neurosis. And as far as Neurosis goes, you really can't ask for anything heavier than Through Silver In Blood. It hurts.

Also, Grails and Yob...fuck yes.

(missed Akimbo, sorry)

And good to see you, Brandon.

Sounds like an amazing fucking show. I was half way expecting that Yob and Scott Kelly would bring the house down with that track from Atma. Maybe that was more of a wish.

I'm an empty shallow human being because I'm so red with raging envy about this show.

.....And new Neurosis you say....EEEEEEEE!!!!

Yeah...expect another divisive and amazing new album from them.

For many reasons I am a fan of all eras and all albums, each with it's own nostalgia and emotions attached to it.

Oh I feel ya! I see the world through Neurosis tinted goggles. They have done no wrong and can do no wrong.

I still go out of my way to thank the guy who introduced me to Neurosis back in high school. My girlfriend was like: "Jeez, you'd think he introduced you to your wife."

And she's not far off.

Apparently the dude's camera was crapping out and he was only able to pick up their opener, "Locust Star". The video/audio seems to be a bit off as well. Still in all, pretty cool footage.

That's an epic night, any way you slice it. Another easy reason to be jealous of the madness happening out there right now.

Looking at metal set lists.com I guess it REALLY was "The Illusion of Motion" that was played instead of "Catharsis". But I let the judgment of more sober people than I influence my words here.

This was the Neurosis set-list.

1. Locust Star
2. Given To The Rising
3. End Of The Harvest
4. Season In The Sky
5. At The Well
6. Water Is Not Enough
7. Belief
8. At The End Of The Road
9. Killing Elk
10. Through Silver And Blood

"At the Well" was the really fucking badass song. Keep on the lookout for that if it materializes out there anywere.

And well, here it is from Europe earlier from this summer. As epic as anything they've ever done.
