Premiered at Sundance and was supposed to be shown at SXSW today, but had some technical difficulties that presumably couldn't be solved by beating the ever-loving fuck out of someone. Still supposed to be shown tomorrow, so I shall hold off my envy until then.

In case you have no idea wtf I'm talking about, The Raid is one of the best action movies to come along in quite awhile and you should go track it down immediately. The first movie takes place almost entirely inside a dark, dilapidated apartment complex. The sequel...not so much.

Released in NY and LA on the 28th, and opening wider sometime later. I seriously hope at least one theater around here will eventually show it, but I'm not optimistic.

Always find it amusing when people comment on that even though Urban never took off the helmet. Urban does play grumpy well.

The Raid taking place in a setting similar to Dredd a year before Dredd even came out is definitely an accurate indicator of its entertainment value.

Dredd was filmed before the raid if I remember correctly. Release date is totally different than the film date. Supposedly dredd was on the shelf for a few years.

his mouth is visible through the entire movie, and perpetually down-turned. i could've said "frowny" but Karl Urban don't frown...he scowls with all of his heart.

I saw the Raid 2 a couple days ago. Personally I liked it better than the first one, although my roommate said he felt it lost something in being a "bigger" movie. You be the judge. It's long, Shakespearean and, of course, ultraviolent. At times veers into Kill Bill territory with some of the characters, but with subtitles you don't have to worry about the delivery of the dialogue, so it never quite crosses the cheese barrier. The camerawork is stunning during the fights and also during a car chase that I felt was one of the best I've ever seen. And yes, the fight pictured on the first frame of that trailer is incredible. People should have posters of these guys on their apartment walls instead of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. This is the new shit, no joke.

I wish I had a clip of this one part early in the movie where the main guy is just unloading on a chalk outline drawn on a wall. A simple scene of him throwing those machine gun practice punches would really tell you all you need to know.

You mean this one?

I was very pleasantly surprised to find out this week that the local Regal was showing this, so I went and saw it today. I'm not sure how I'd compare it to the first, but I really liked this and would absolutely recommend anyone that enjoyed the first to go see this. I can understand some of the complaints I've seen about the actual story bits getting in the way of the fistpunching, but I think those people went into the sequel with a different mindset than I did. The plot of the first movie was more about getting everyone from one action scene to another, but the sequel is the complete opposite.

I can understand the idea that something was "lost" in the sequel, but that's because (aside from the action scenes) they feel like really different movies to me. The first was a claustrophobic fight for survival against insane odds, and had a subtle sense of horror to it. It reminds me a lot of the original Assault on Precinct 13, but the primal brutality of the face to face violence sells the horror aspect better than AoP13 did. The immediacy of the setting feeds the violence and makes every fight feel like a bunch of (very well trained) animals are trying to tear each other apart.

That's not really the case in the sequel. Where the first was all of the above, the sequel is more like an "undercover in the mob" movie with really impressive action scenes thrown in. Rama isn't suddenly thrust into a completely insane situation. He goes into it having some idea of what he's getting into and knows he's going to be on his own. And to some degree, the movie isn't even about him. After the setting change his story becomes more of a secondary plot to the workings and familial dynamics of the mob family, and it stays that way for quite awhile. I was surprised at how many stretches there were where Rama is completely MIA. And I think all of that is felt in the action scenes themselves, and is where the idea of something being "lost" is felt the most. The action doesn't have the same feel to it as it did in the first movie because it isn't being fed by and doesn't feel so intimately tied to the setting, story, and circumstances.

I don't mean any of the above as criticism of either movie. Berandal is a long movie, but aside from a bit of a slow start I was surprised to find how quickly it all went by. I really appreciate that they tried to do something so different from the first movie with the sequel, and I think they largely succeeded in that endeavor. The plot does meander in some places, and it is a little slow to start, but the main attraction (the action sequences) really benefit from the bigger budget and are no less entertaining. They're just entertaining in a different way this time.

I saw Captain America 2 the other day, and I have to say, that seemed long to me, and the Raid 2 did not. It's pretty rare these days that I go see a movie (or a band) and don't start getting restless. So kudos to this Scottish or Welsh director and his merry band of slap happy Indonesians. They didn't make any money, but they made some fans.

Guess i need to be addicted to an XBOX "to get" these new action flicks. Too over the top to be believable, so i'll still take classics like Magnum Force/etc. over 'em everytime.

I thought it was a bit overlong, but I was engrossed throughout and when the action kicked in, it was beyond description. Highly recommended.

Somehow they made this movie boring. Repetitive action scenes and a generic story with nothing characters stretched out for 2 and half hours. I liked the porn leader guy so that 5 minutes was good.

2.5 hours of near slapstick ultra violence. What is not to like?
I hope the third one is 5 hours long, and they fight on the moon.
