Trailer for Neil DeGrasse Tyson's sequel (or...update, I suppose.) I like the trailer, it shows glimpses of some vintage Cosmos tributes (cheesy-ness and all).

I'm cautiously optimistic. No one can touch Carl Sagan, but NDT is the only one I can think of who could even come close.

I'm incredibly excited. The initial announcement that Seth MacFarlane, of all people, was the one behind it left me skeptical. Then I saw Tyson was hosting it, and I was hopeful. Then I saw the trailer, and I was totally on board.

I have faith in NDT, but the MacFarlane/Fox connection is strange. I'm sure I'll check it out and at least give it a chance. I'm a huge fan of Sagan's Cosmos. I need to dig out the DVD set I have buried in my basement somewhere and watch it again.

The MacFarlane connection is a head scratcher indeed. I felt balance with Ann Druyan (Sagans widow and helped write Cosmos OG) and Dr. Tyson on board, but bringing Family Guy sensibilities into something as sacred as Cosmos feels risky. I'm not saying Seth MacFarlane is incapable of adapting his style without said sensibilities, I've just never seen him do it. I heard somewhere that his involvement was more closing the deal with Fox and less conception/production. But don't quote me. I almost wish Fox would air the original as a lead up, but that's probably a fantasy.

But I'm with Bullio. The trailer has tickled my Sagan bone.

Ann Druyan, and Seth MacFarlane are executive producers of the new Cosmos. From what I've seen/heard from Seth, he's a skeptic/atheist/science guy. So I'm pretty sure he won't be trying to force Family Guy humour into it. I'm pretty sure he was the one that was actually able to get this show put onto a major network, and not just settle for something like PBS.

I'm hopeful. It seems to be a HD remake of the original. Several of the scenes in the trailer are the same from the original series. Things like the one year calendar to frame the age of the universe/humans, and the Spaceship of the Imagination were in the original.

We have a release date! March 9th at 9pm on Fox, and March 10th on Nat Geo.

So what's the verdict.

I am enjoying the episodes quite a bit, learned a few new things already...but for the most part I was feeling that it was a little simplistic in its approach...then my wife pointed out (correctly) that the point of the show is to get people into science, which means making it interesting and easy to follow for a prime time audience.

I am just pleased to see the subtle-but-firm, polite-but-pointed calling out of religion's war on science.

After 3 episodes, it's a nice tribute to the original. Unfortunately it's something that is needed in the US. If you have seen the original, there's no real point in watching this in my opinion.

I dig. Neil DeGrasses Tyson doing the job he was born to do, and Druyan keeps it very classy and old school. The only thing it suffers from that the original didn't is commercials and running time.

Ya know, for kids!
