Anybody else seen this yet? I've been counting the days since I first learned about this doc, and I finally got to watch it for the first time today. Very well done. Not quite as tragic as the Anvil doc, but just as insightful into the ups & downs of the business, and Dave Grohl comes across as even more of a super awesome guy than he already does. The soundbites from Neil Young are priceless.

Totally killer documentary, even if it's less about the studio than the Neve soundboard. And, to an extent, how all around awesome Dave Grohl is.

Indeed! Thanks to Mr. Grohl for putting this doc together and keeping that board in commission!

It's amazing to think how many great sounds were captured in that room. Even stuff we consider lightweight like REO Speedwagon and Rick Springfield had a sound that really jumped out at you.

The history part of the doc was really cool. This was the place that basically created the entity we knew/heard as Fleetwood Mac in the 70's. And of course, Nevermind. ALL the good KYUSS albums. And it was a shithole operating on a threadbare budget.

I thought the collabs at Grohl's studio with the board were a worthy addition to the film. Especially the Stevie Nicks and Josh Homme/Trent Reznor collabs. The Dave, Josh, Trent collab to me was like "fuck". Not a fan of Reznor, but there is no doubt you're seeing three A+ guys just riffing around in this.

Only a handful of songs in but it's a lot like Probot in that Grohl's got a remarkable knack for distilling genres down to an essential sound. The Rick Springfield track sounds like what you'd expect a Rick Springfield song to sound like (and has no business being as good as it is). Ditto the Stevie Knicks and so on.

I found that link last night and listened to most of it. I was bummed they put vocals over the Reznor/Homme/Grohl thing. Also struck by how much the Foo Fighters ARE Rick Springfield. They just had a slightly harder edge and all the cred (a boatload) from the grunge fallout that Rick never had, with his name attached to General Hospital and Tiger Beat.

Ha, you're totally right about Foo Fighters being Rick Springfield. They tried to play up the "OMG! We're playing with McCartney!" angle in the movie, but he was obviously more stoked to be playing "Jesse's Girl."
