I don't care if it makes me a sucker. I get a big ol' nerdboner when they start singing.

Holy shit, Martin Freeman is playing Bilbo?! How am I just finding this out? I was looking forward to this before, but now I'm pissed that I have to wait a year to see this.

A whole year :( I hate being teased.
The making of/behind the scenes videos are great, too.

I'm glad that it appears from a distance that Jackson is treating this story with the same passion and affection as he did for the trilogy.

Killer trailer.

Surely that singing indicates that Kai, last of the Brunin-Gee is about to arrive!

My penis tingles at the very thought of this movie.

A Silmarillion movie would be interesting.

Loved watching that production video.
I've been very fortunate to have been to New Zealand twice and it's one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I will go back.

Just saw it. I had low expectations going in but I thought this was as good as the LotR triliogy if not better. I didn't watch in 48fps because I heard it was terrible. Worth your time. I saw the comment made that Martin Freeman is way better as a hobbit than Wood and I agree. He pretty much makes the movie enjoyable. The pony murder scene was great.

Game Of Thrones killed all interest in me to see this. And the running time. 166 min. and thats only the first part? Can't wait for the director's cut.

3 parts...

lame and self indulgent ala George Lucas. It's the shortest of the books and you milk it into 3 movies spread out like this? almost make me to not bother with it.

In a ideal situation it's just one 4 hour long movie. The Hobbit doesn't scream out blockbuster action epic to me as much as the LotR did either but it's being treated as such. I'll take what I can get though. I hope they do a cut after all 3 are over that sticks just to The Hobbit.

I believe the original plan was to just do two movies based on the book, but they decided "fuck it" and dug into various external sources like appendices and Tolkien's notes for extra material and made a trilogy out of it.

Can't wait for this. I was actually an extra in The Hobbit but only the destruction of Laketown scene which were were told will be in part two.

I understand part of the first movie involves them hanging out a Rivendell, which was glossed over in the book as being unimportant.

I'm not entirely slagging on the film - I'll eventually check it out. It just seems unnecessary to draw it out this much.

Warning: this is not a glowing review..don't let me ruin it for you.

Saw it last night...really beautiful cinematography as usual. Gollum stole the movie for me and he only has a modicum of screen time. They tease a few glimpses at Smaug which look very promising as well. Gandalf is in fine form, and Martin Freeman is great as Bilbo. On the downside though, the CGI is not up to par with the LotR trilogy, in my opinion, with a physics-ignoring over-long chase scene in the goblin caves. And speaking of goblins, they seemed reduced to a comic relief / fodder role here, and the dwarves overall came off as a bit over the top as well.

And for the love of fucking fuck why can't a hobbit just put a fucking ring on instead of this ridiculous "oops" as it flies through the air and miraculously drops directly on their finger? I fucking hated it when they did that in LotR and I fucking hated it last night. Pulls me straight out of the movie and pisses me off.

As a fan boy, I am expecting better with the next installment, otherwise I might lose patience.

I can't help but get the feeling the 2hr 40min fan-edit will rule.

I'll go see it, but two movies seemed kinda self-indulgent, yet understandable.
Three? Seriously? Three movies?

Was pretty slow and there were a few too many cheesy moments but overall quite enjoyed it. Looking forward to Part Two when I'll hopefully be able to see my face on screen haha.

As a fellow nerdboner-haver, I found it quite slow. The first LOTR film was slow too, but this seemed slower.

A glut of flashbacks doesn't help. They even frame the whole movie within a flashback, ostensibly to point out that it's a prequel to the three people who aren't aware, but I think it's just so they can get a shot of Elijah Wood in. Mindfuck.

The original cartoon is clearer and finishes up in less than half of the time it takes the first third of this to complete.

It's especially frustrating as they pulled good material out of the first three movies (first and third in particular) only to pad this set.

Caremad.

I liked it, but could've done without the Rock Giants.
The entire movie played out like a Disney ride (Pirates of Penzance!) and Rivendell looked like a fuck'n Thomas Kinkade painting (some of them glow in the dark..you know).

Image

The thinly veiled drug references, smoking pot! trippin' on shrooms! get a nudge-wink from the stoners in the audience, but I don't think it's something that Tolkien had intended.
I liked the brown wizard and his rhosgobel rabbits - whimsical! and I liked the emergence of The Necromancer (Caress of Steel).
I'll take The Hobbit over any superhero movie as of late.
