Watching this flick right now...."The Fighter" meets "Rocky". The previews always left me sceptical, just seemed like a knock off of past movies, and MMA has always seemed like kind of a gimmick to me, although I do realize the violence is real. Just always seemed like WWF minus the acting. However, this feels like a legit script/story, plus Tom Hardy is a beast. So far so good..,,,

Tom Hardy > Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale

He could take 'em both.

Very solid movie. Tom Hardy is an absolute animal in his role. Perhaps the best fight scenes I've ever scene in a fighter/boxer flick. Nick Nolte is also notable as the desperate father. Not genre defining as such, but worth a watch for sure

Haven't seen this movie but went to my first mixed martial arts fight the other week in Vegas and really enjoyed it. Wasn't into the sport prior, but left one.

That said, for whatever reason, I have always hated Rocky's. (That never sat well with any of my friends while living in Philly). Every time I hear a movie get compared to Rocky makes me not want to see it.

take
2 parts highly popular sport
2 parts clichéd plot developments
2 parts scenes there just to evoke emotions
1 part halfway decent acting by washed up actor

mix all together in a large and expensive receptacle. bake for 140 minutes and you get one abysmally bad movie.

they shouldve stopped making 'fighting' movies after Bloodsport.

Crying Fist and The Art of Fighting are awesome movies based around fighting.

No they don't... But I see that as a good thing. That "man" has the perfect amount of cheese for the 80s.

I'm going to have to skip any/all UFC related movies..just because. They will all end up with the same old tired Rocky-themed storyline, bad soundtrack and cheesy to worse acting. Call me close minded.

There is one faint ray of hope..its for the Winding-Refn/Gosling Only God Forgives, (being filmed now), that involves Thai Boxing..not MMA I know, but I dont think I can sit through anymore martial arts/boxing movies, let alone MMA. Just has limited marketability (16-25yo backwards cap wearing mongs)

K hungus, I hear you re: MMA..I have no interest in it as a "sport" but the movie/story transcends it enough, plus Tom hardy is a very realistic bad ass in it, and for a fan of his time in the Nolan movies ( he plays the villain in the upcoming batman) is worth a viewing just from his presence. Seriously, the fight scenes are outstanding, violent AND compelling.

yeah I am not sure if the fact that I am a fan of MMA is a factor or not, but I didn't see anything in the trailers that made me want to see this...how can it not be cliche and predictable?

on a side note, the 'backwards-cap wearing' douchebag stereotype is entirely true...I wish it wasn't, and I certainly don't consider myself one of those, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the sport....I mean really, most hockey and football fans aren't much better, but I enjoy both of those as well.

It was a generalization..I dont fit the demographic either and have been with the MMA since it's inception. I used to run to Blockbuster and rent the VHS as soon as they came out. I grew tired of the politics in boxing and the big fights taking years to develop, sometimes past their fighters prime even.

A movie about it just wouldnt interest me, as boxing movies have already been there, done that. I used to enjoy Bruce Lee as a kid too, alot. But after awhile even the martial arts movies became all the same. I think Claude Damme was the last to catch my attention when I was younger.

Probably my age is showing but yeah, bruce was the greatest...although I will admit to enjoying the first couple chuck norris flicks as well....by the time JCVD came around my interests were elsewhere.

I hope MMA doesn't go the way of boxing...that would be a shame.

Man, I used to run to the video store too to catch the UFC VHS stuff that had just been released. The fighters like Oleg Taktarov, Dan Severin, Marcos Ruas, Ken Shamrock, Royce Grace, Don Fry, Maurice Smith, and Mark "The Hammer" Coleman just fascinated me. I loved that era. I'm not interested anymore, though.

"Warrior" looked terrible. No way I'd go see that. Sorry.

It's a pretty good movie. I agree it has a cliche-ridden plot but acting, characters, pacing are real good. Fast 140 minutes.
