I haven't read the book, but after seeing the movie; the remark of a "plot driven novel" seems valid.

Griftopia has some useful irreverent analysis of the situation. He uses hyperbolic humor, but it makes for an entertaining read.
But the movie is good. Even heart pounding in a lot of scenes. HBO's current trend of movies-based-off-of-current-events seems to be working well for them.
