Never got around to seeing the original (for shame, I know), but we found the US remake surprisingly good. Well done and suitably creepy. The one complaint is that the CGI bits were obvious, which made them sad.

My dad liked it, which is strange as he normally can't stand anything even vaguely within the horror genre. I never saw it because I had just seen the original (which I liked), and felt like it would be a waste of my time. My precious, precious time.

I remember somebody telling me that the subtitles on the original are really poorly done and significant parts of the story are literally "lost in translation". So I may find the American version different enough for that reason alone.

Yeah, I had heard that the subtitles were dumbed down.

Pretty close to the original, really. They did every one a favor and didn't try to recreate the embarrassing "cat scene" from the first one. Overall, though, not sure why movies like this have to be made. The original was quite good and there weren't many deviations from it in this new one.

I'm assuming they wanted to tap into the "Loves intelligent, well crafted horror films that don't rely on cheap scares and are in English" market, which, judging by the film's box office returns, did not exist.

Yeah, that, and, I'm sure, the vampire angle didn't hurt in terms of the studio thinking it would make some cash with the vampofanatics.

Movies like let the right one in, The Grudge, and .rec get remade because anything in the "horror" genre done outside of the U.S. that even gets a glimmer of recognition gets remade. Quarantine is almost a shot for shot duplicate. I havent seen let me in, and probably won't until it's shown on TV.

Hollywood has almost no originality left, so it's easier to just re-make J Horror, and british sitcoms.
I'm truly surprised that we weren't treated to a Rob Zombie remake of Martyrs, McG redoing High Tension, or something equally as silly.

Because I can't leave well enough alone, I checked out the wikipedia article on this flick. Apparently the rights were optioned before the Swedish film was even made. For what it's worth.

Doesn't take away from Neutron's spot on assessment on remakes.

That's a hell of a way to start a remake. Start talking to the producers before the original has even screened.

The DVD release of Let the Right One In didn't have the theatrical version subtitles. It was later re-released with theatrical subtitles after enough people complaining. I think that might be it.

I think that's a perfect example why the written word is so important. So much can get lost with just a couple of poorly chosen words.

There was absolutely no need to remake Let The Right One In so fuck this movie.
