"After years of fighting piracy, the industry is now trying to wring as much money as it can from digital music, and finally seeing growth."

Now if they could wrap their head around the idea that radio only works when there is an intelligent human DJ curating the music slate (NO MORE ALGORITHMS), then we would have a vibrant music industry once again., But I'm not holding my breath.

Applauding the duped public paying a premium for lossy bitrate steaming? Def something the NY Times would approve.

Great article, thanks for posting! Appreciated =)

Yeah, I've really liked the small amounts of DJ'ing I've been doing lately in my limited spare time. I spun metal/stoner/psych records at a record fair, and it was received really well. I got some networking opportunities out of it, and a lot of people came up to talk about or ask what I'd played, or just to tell me that they dug it. One guy in a Kyuss shirt came up to tell me it was cool hearing "our" music when he was least expecting it.

I also did a guest spot on our local radio station a couple weeks back, which usually plays like soft rock, and usually the same songs over and over, day in day out. I've done guest spots before, though I usually play a wide variety of things. This time, they wanted me to play "heavy stuff." I played all metal/doom/sludge/etc, and I thought that I'd get complaints or something because it was pretty extreme. Instead, the station got a ton of emails saying they really dug the show. The guy who books me forwarded me one choice email, by a guy saying that it was cool to hear "real musicians playing real music" on the radio.

I agree with you, this algorithm shit has got to go. Real music for real people!!!

Friends of mine are always asking me: "Send some new music my way. You always know whats new and good out there."

This is only partially true. I don't know whats out there, I simply write down what I hear thats good on WFMU.
https://wfmu.org/
I have a pen and paper by my computer and I have headphones on all day, but they pick out the good stuff. I tell people to listen but few do... and yet they listen to fucking spotify. WTF.
These are the shows from the last good radio station that I dig:

Imaginary Radio with Chris M.:

What Was Music? with Marcel M:
