Yeah, it rules. It's apparently a radio edit version, b/c the album version is 6:45.

Pissed off Hetfield is infinitely better than the bellowing/shit-crooning thing he's been doing for the past 900 years.

Is it better than anything since Justice? Yes.
However, Hetfield's voice is missing the raspy growl from the early days which kind of propels the music in my opinion. I'm sure I'm asking a lot from someone in their mid 50s.

The song writing is OK but its not Master, Creeping, Battery, Horsemen etc. level.

I think metallica should just play old stuff in nostalgia concerts. they are tapped.
That being said, I have no problem listening to the newer metallica(post reload). it is decent music, but nothing like early metallica was. Early metallica is still the shit.

THAT BEING SAID,heh, Death angel in the 80's blew metallica away. IMO, DA blew everyone else away at the time in the emerging thrash world.

I second the new death angel too...

The song isn't the worst thing Metallica has ever done, but it definitely has a "mailing-it-in" quality to it to my ears. Hetfield wrote all of those violent and sinister riffs in the 80's and while this is thrash, that old feeling is missing here. Somebody forgot to tell them that the big 80's retro-thrash revival that was in full swing when they recorded 'Death Magnetic' is mostly over with now.

That said, Death Magnetic was okay overall and this is one of my favorite bands of lore, so I'll check out this album, mostly out of curiosity.

Kind of on that subject, I've been pretty down on SLAYER here and on the old board, at least since 'God Hates Us All' but on a lark me and my concert buddy from college checked them out last Spring when they played here and they fucking blew us away! They really hadn't lost a step from a live perspective, so I checked out their last album, 'Repentless' and it was actually pretty good! I didn't think it would be possible without Jeff Hanneman, who I really think was the true leader of the band, but KK pulled it off.

VOIVOD were also fucking amazing when I saw them a couple months back. And they never really lost the thread of what made them great after all of this time.

I don't hate this new song either but I've been done with them for a long time (the old classics excluded) and this won't change that.

Ive always been of the opinion that true Metalllica died with Cliff - more than that I would also argue that true Metallica, for the most part, only exists with Dave Mustaine contributing to the band. After all, Dave's riffs were used on "Kill'em All", "Ride The Lightning", and "Master of Puppets". After The rest of their work is just a shell of what it was with those two elements.

BUT... I can't take myself seriously if I'm going to say this single isn't promising. There's very very few things not to like here. I could actually do without the first 1:09 of the track . From 1:10 on its all killer and no filler. Good for them. The world needs more quality thrash and they are uniquely qualified to provide it, even with their massively bloated bank accounts. Maybe I'm just rooting for the two surfers in the band, Kirk and Robert. Especially Robert Trujillo - a mega nice guy.

Remember when Load came out twenty years ago,and how everyone was pissed? lol

The new song is average, kinda boring tbh. I hope the other songs are better.

It's OK but I aint standing in line at Tower Records to get a tape. I'll probably just tape it off the radio.

I could probably geek out about Metallica all night, but while losing Dave and Cliff were big blows to the band, I thought they were still great and successfully set out in doing what they wanted to in the experiments that were AJFA and the Black Album. They really didn't start getting boring until they became mega-mega millionaires, but they've always remained kind of interesting because they took seemingly unpopular chances, even after they lost their fire (Load, the orchestra thing, fighting Napster, St. Anger, Lulu, etc...), which is why this return to thrash seems kind of lame to me. I guess the album is 80 minutes long and taking this song away means the rest of the songs on there will average 7 minutes. They'll have a hard time keeping those songs interesting if this one is any indication.

I wonder what my colleague and friend Rampage Radio's Ron Quintana thinks about it. Ron created the name for Metallica when he came up with the name for his fanzine. I'll have to ask him. Funny Ron is also a fan of my own show.

I hope the other songs on the album are better. Looks like they're using a completely different producer this time. Then again they suffer from the Bob Rock curse. Anything they do,even if it's good, will slightly suck on some level. Multi-millionaires trying to sound "angry"just doesn't sound convincing to me. No dis to them though, I actually know how to get in touch and meet Kirk Hammett if I wanted to.

Ha. Metallica has kinda become the Taco Bell of metal...like when you're drunk and shameless and just want something cheap and filling. I'll always like those early albums and I'll certainly listen to this new one before casting judgement...but there is so much better metal out their these days...I'll take the new Death Angel, Vader, Behemoth, Slayer, Exodus, Skeletonwitch...doom metal like Graves At Sea and Monolord...and this really gets my testes tingling...

I haven't had Taco Bell since 2009. I kinda miss it,but I don't eat at fast food places that much. Metallica is like a leftover taco from the 80's. It tasted great and fresh back then, and while it's still crunchy now ,the 'Tallica taco is just moldy and gross.

It's a simple song for simple minds. Definitely Walmart metal lol.

I listened to this a couple more times. It strikes me as a slayer song. Like a garage band was doing some slayer worship.

NOT COMPLAINING, because there is not nearly enough thrash in the world today, but I think slayer would sound better doing this song.

also, all the mini-bands etc can easily cover this brand new ground-breaking metallica heh.

new meshuggah yeah.....

That's a pretty damned insightful video! I don't know how they made it without breaking the internet? But the And Justice For All sample had way too much bass. That album is in desperate need of remastering...maybe even re-record the bass lines with Trujillo? at this point, I don't give a shit about Newsted's feelings...I just want this album to sound like it should have. I demand Justice!
