Grails
Monkey3
Tempel

...also like most Don Caballero, 35007, Ultra Electric Mega Galactic, Pelican and Giza.

I thought about Don Cab...but I don't know their full catalog that well...and some songs are total home runs for me...and some just are not. I dig when they mix the mathy elements with hooks, but at times it just sounds like mathy just to be mathy. I'm also not a musician, so I may be missing some of that detail/point.

I've also tried to listen to the more recent Don Cab post band Broughton's Rules...and just haven't gotten hooked on what I've heard, yet anyway

most recent album of their's below;

Yeah, I can't get into all Don Cab, but I really like what I like from them... I do appreciate what they do (did?) from a musician perspective...but some of it just doesn't resonate with me. I like Punkgasm, World Class Listening Problem, most of 2, and most of What Burns... Listening to Broughton's Rules now. Sounds much less chaotic and fairly straight forward compared to Don Cab. I've only heard the 1st two songs off Anechoic Horizon though. So far, much more atmospheric...like Don Cab with a touch of Earth. Battles is amazingly talented music but just a little bit saccharine and un-organic for my taste. But the talent level of all the affiliated musicians with Don Cab is incredible. When it comes down to instrumental rock, I'll take the big, dumb, ADD-proof riffs of Karma To Burn any day...especially Almost Heathen and Wild Wonderful Purgatory.

New Monkey3 is awesome. I don't know about all time but they're up there. Pelican might be my pick.

It's def just my opinion/musical taste as I lean towards the prog side of music, but Karma to Burn...albeit the small sample I've heard, sounds like just decent/ok instrumental stoner rock to me. Haven't heard anything I thought was that interesting, and I figured I would. West Virginia, seemed like sort of an edge to them. But it doesn't do it for me, unless I'm just not educated enough on their catalog.

Terata, have you heard of this group below?

I totally recognize that most of the sr.com crowd left Pelican behind many moons ago since the fawned over EP. But for me personally, they got better with their more recent albums as song and hook writers.

A couple of my more favorite recent songs below;

Spot on about Battles by the way. Heap of talent...and I've always been a Stanier fan, but they sound pretty plastic/soul less to me.

And this is one of the cooler instrumental albums I've heard in a while. Dutch band called Town Portal. Mathy like Don Cab but a little smoother. Check this out;

kewl topic:)

1)The Minibosses

2)NESkimos

3)SubArachnoid Space

4)The Advantage

5)The Fucking Champs

Funny tidbits about The Minibosses...

Hutch,their sound guy, was also KYUSS' sound guy during the 90's. The Minibosses also opened for QOTSA back in 2005. Which means Josh Homme digs instrumental covers of Nintendo songs?? lol I swear their drummer is like Bill Ward..

The Fucking Champs,another great instrumental band ironically also produced The Minibosses' 2011 album called Brass 2.

Was also going to say Pelican but honestly they haven't aged too well in my ears. Used to spin the hell out of The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw ten years ago though. Even their first EP is okay but not something I listen to on the regular. My friend's new band Virgo Supercluster is worth an honorable mention. They're all instrumental and they just put out an EP.The guitarist in that band is my friend Bruno who also plays bass for FLIPPER.

The Coffin Daggers are also worth a mention if you dig heavy surf style instrumentals. Not to mention they do a real killer cover of Interstellar Overdrive. The best I've heard. Their first album's super rare but worth keeping an eye out. This one's soo Heavy,like imagine The Melvins covering this song,this comes close...

Some worthy additions:

Mystick Krewe of Clearlight
Budos Band
Russian Circles
Tia Carrera
5ive
Barn Owl
Earthless
Loincloth
Mammatus
Megaton Leviathan
Rhyton

Best instrumental offering by a band that has no business doing vocals:
Instrumental version of Mastodon's Crack the Skye

on the electronic side, a guy I've been listening to a lot over the past few months;

Com Truise. If you dig Zombi/Steve Moore...heavy synth with a little prog, very cool.
Good album below

Yes! I do like Capricorns. I have, "River, Bear Your Bones" and "Ruder Forms Survive". I need to get caught up with their catalog. K2B is really just that...stoner instrumental riffs...nothing too complicated... But sometimes that's all I need. Those "Wild Wonderful Purgatory" songs will be stuck in my head forever. Maybe it's just where/who I was at the time? I've seen them live several times (the original line up) and they always brought it. Totally forgot about Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight and Tia Carrera. I have a shitload of new bands to check out from this thread alone!

The only thing you're missing is Capricorns first..which was a 3 song EP, which is just as good material as Ruder Forms and River..

I don't think River is as good of material as their first EP and Ruder Forms (Ruder Forms is easily one of my top 10 rock albums of all time) because Chris Turner (from Orange Goblin) left the band after Ruder Forms. His playing is outstanding on those first two releases, and really shows off what a good drummer he is.

Something a bit more indie rock, but a really cool listen, is a band from the Twin Cities called Story of the Sea. They released a double album, and the first album is all instrumental. Imagine David Bowie meets Jawbox

Tracks 1 through 11 on the link below is the instrumental album

Also 5ive's last release "Hesperus" was/is very cool. Even cooler in person, saw them at Great Scott...with Hackman opening up (another Boston instrumental band...who were outstanding live)

Another one here for Mahavishnu Orchestra - also of that time: Billy Cobham's Spectrum and Return To Forever's Romantic Warrior.

As for current stuff - John MacLaughlin is still making great records, but Earthless, Monkey 3, Monomyth, My Sleeping Karma and Ed Mundell's Ultra Electric Mega Galactic are worth checking out.

I love Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I'd put them at the top I guess, but it's a whole different generation.

In my lifetime:

Do Make Say Think
The Grasshopper Lies Heavy
Pelican (because I only have the first three albums)
Mogwai
Godspeed You Black Emperor

Have to give respect to Mammatus, Earthless and My Sleeping Karma though. Any of whom could steal a spot if I was more familiar with their stuff.

Inter Arma pretty much owns whatever they do - including instrumentals.

For anyone into the post-metal/post-rock stuff...this is one of my favorite instrumental albums of the past 15 years and/or ever.
