Jayson Heyward to Chicago.

Michael Cuddyer retires. Mets must be kinda relieved to get his contract off the books. But he was definitely a good guy, I really enjoyed rooting for him while he was a Rockie.

Man, I would be sweating bullets over the Shark and Cueto signings if I were a hardcore Giants fan. I'm a fan of the team, and they seemingly plug holes better than any other team in MLB, but talk about two big name pitchers that I would have a hard time loving having on my team.

Conversely, how stoked are Cub fans? Signing BOTH Zobrist and Heyward for $10-15 million less than other teams were offering a piece! They traded away their biggest headcase in Castro for actual pitching value. Fangraphs has the Cubs projected for 99 wins next season. I don't know if they break the curse, but they're a playoff fixture for the next five-six years at least until they have to start paying Arrieta, Rizzo (only owed $19MM through 2018), Bryant, Russell, Schwarber. They STILL probably have room to sign another bigger free agent for three-four years. It's fuckin' nuts.

The whole Giants/KC winning model is definitely degrading the value of low-average power hitters. It'll be interesting to see if Chris Davis gets the $154 MM Baltimore pulled off the table for him.

If it was just about any other team but a Bay Area one, I might be more worried about Samardzija and Cueto all that money, given their past seasons (especially Samardjiza!). But I feel like SF will end up with value from both of those guys. Especially Cueto.

And I can't think of a way that the Cubs offseason could get any better. Oh wait, yeah I can. Watch them trade Javier Baez or Jorge Soler for some young, cheap, and really good SP.

I think power will always sell. Davis will get his money, even if he is this years Prince Fielder.

And Jeff Francis retires. No one else probably cares but he was one of the few Rockies pitchers to experience any success while in Denver. That is a rarity.

Dodgers pull their three year offer for Iwakuma after his physical comes back unfavorable, so the M's swoop in and sign him for a year with vesting options for 2017 & 2018. Best possible scenario for Seattle really. He definitely wants to finish his career up there now and the vesting options protects Seattle if he does end up turning lame over the next couple of seasons. I thought the three year deal LA put up originally was pretty risky, given his age and injury history. Hopefully Seattle gets good value in-between the DL stints over the next three years. As the no-hitter this season demonstrates; he still has some good innings left in his arm.

Happy birthday to Daniel Murphy and the Mets.

3 years and a reported $37.5 million with Washington and Mets get a supplemental pick. Murphy's bat plays solidly at 2B but his fielding certainly doesn't. I really don't think he's worth the money and to also be giving up a pick for him, reeks a little of desperation and poor management, IMO. Mets are definitely better off with Neil Walker and the pick.

Griffey and Piazza to the HOF.

How did 3 votes NOT vote for Griffey? Happy to see Piazza make it too, perhaps his inclusion will open the door for all the other guys with PED suspicions around them.

Ditto. Pretty fucking happy about Junior setting the HOF vote record from a percentage standpoint. He definitely deserved it. Piazza definitely needed to get in as well. I'm actually just as happy for him as Junior.

Bagwell was next at around 71% or something, which I think is kind of ridiculous. Bonds definitely gets in before him and probably Clemens as well.

The cutting off the voting for voters who haven't been active in the game in 10 years was definitely a good thing. There were way too many crusty/grumpy fucks voting for this and I would definitely like to know who the three dicks were who found TEN more players who deserved to get in before Griffey did.

KC paying Alex Gordon $18MM per for four years was too much (isn't he like 32 years old coming off a pretty big injury?), but it's definitely a feel-good story. That franchise hung their hat on that guy for so many years, like forever, so it was cool to see him eventually help get them to the promised land. He's the face of the franchise and it would have been lame to see him go and play somewhere like Anaheim and Boston and just be a cog in the wheel.

I like the Gordon signing. Probably a more palpable deal for a bigger market team, but if they continue to win I think its good to have that homegrown player like him around. It will probably pay off long run.

Helton outlived the value of his contract for a long while there in Denver but he always contributed to the team, so fans always enjoyed seeing him in the uniform. He helped give the team an identity, probably something outsiders couldn't see/understand, but locals definitely got it. And now that he played his career as a Rockies it only means more. I bet Gordon servers a similar role in KC. As long as George Brett is around he remains king there I imagine, but Gorden probably makes for a nice second chair (once he retires, of course). The World Series ring Gordon just one definitely helps earn him a spot in KC history.

As for the Rockies....they just signed Gerrardo Parra. I wonder who gets traded now? Cargo or Blackmon? Dickerson is a dark horse but I expect it to be one of the other too. I will miss Cargo if he goes but if the price is right, sobeit. Hoping its Blackmon, personally.

Not sure I like the deal if he opts against opting out after 2 years but Tigers nab Justin Upton.
Tigers definitely seem to be going down the same road recently taken by the Phillies, but for now I do think they still have a shot. What kind of shot? Not really World Series kinda shot, IMO, but at least getting into the playoffs kinda shot. Baseball needs more owners like Ilitch, even if he might be setting his team up for a big crash within the next couple years. They did begin to restock their farm system with their trades last year though, that might hopefully help them out.

Sounds like Cespades is deciding between a 5 year, $100 million deal with Washington or maybe a 3 year deal with an option to opt out after 1 with 1 and that he would prefer NY to Washington.

Glad Cespedes "compromised" and came back to NY. Kind of the same reason as Gordon resigning with KC; I just like seeing the World Series teams coming back to as close to full strength as possible, which is getting tougher to do with the current free agent working environment. The team seems to be an overall good fit for him. I think the overall talent in the NL is a knotch below the AL, so he should continue to shine with that team, where he was kind of flashy, albeit inconsistent with his three AL stays.

Detroit surprises by signing Upton to a huge contract. I saw an article that a Vegas oddsmaker said the signing moved their overall 2016 win expectation from 79 wins to 82 wins. I have to concur with that. I still forecast them as being a middle-of-the-pack team with huge risk in Miggy and V-Mart. If Miggy can turn in a career 162 game season, then yeah, they could win 90-ish games, but I don't know if that'll ever happen again. I guess it's bound to occur at some point. Tigers fans have to be happy Illich isn't throwing in the towel. I think they're payroll exceeds Boston's now, in the Yankees territory now, which is insane for that dying, fiscally broke media market.

There is apparently momentum toward making both leagues using DHs in 2017. Goddamn I hope that never happens. That is one area where I have to give Selig credit for, in that he held the line as far as that goes, but the players seemingly gain power every year and you know they're the ones lobbying for it (keeps hitters around longer, reduces injuries to pitchers).

I always like seeing The Super Bowl arrive every year because it means we're just about a month away from baseball being back on again. This Carolina game is turning into the ass-kicking I was afraid it was going to. At least NE/Denver was close and satisfying.

Heading to Washington DC in a couple of weeks. I'll be there for like ten or eleven days and the Nats play everyday, so I imagine I'll see some games in between site seeing. Once the Nats leave town, they head up to NYC to play the Mets and I'll follow them for a game. Then I head home. After this trip, the only current MLB stadium left for me to see is Yankee Stadium (but the Yanks are on the road for the entirety of my trip). But also, the new Atlanta stadium opens next season (and Texas on 2021).

M's are pretty good this year!

Hit ballparks #31 & 32 for me over the last couple of weeks. The rank for Citi Field is much higher than I would have thought but it did end up being a totally awesome baseball experience. Maybe I was swept away after the great disappointment that was Shea Stadium.

#1 Kaufmann Stadium
#2 Oriole Park
#3 Busch Stadium
#4 Wrigley Field
#5 Fenway Park
#6 Citi Field
#7 Safeco Field
#8 Petco Park
#9 Comerica Park
#10 Oakland-Alameda County Colesium
#11 Target Field
#12 Great American Ballpark
#13 Rogers Centre
#14 Citizens Bank Park
#15 Chase Field
#16 Progressive Field
#17 Nationals Park
#18 AT&T Park
#19 Coors Field
#20 Rangers Ballpark
#21 Miller Park
#22 Marlins Park
#23 Turner Field
#24 Tropicana Field
#25 PNC Park
#26 Angel Stadium
#27 Minute Maid Park
#28 US Cellular Field
#29 Dodger Stadium

The beauty/look aspects weigh equal to culture, concessions, neighborhood and actually take a backseat to affordability, so some visually beautiful parks rank lower than uglier places like Toronto and Oakland.

Nationals Park is nice, but definitely deserves it's middle of the pack ranking. Nothing really jumps out. It's actually almost a mirror image of the park above it; Progressive Field in Cleveland. Like Cleveland, it's in a great spot with better overall concessions, but weaker fans. It's an overall expensive place to see a game as well.

Citi Field really impressed me, more than I thought it would. They did this one right (I don't have high hopes for the new Yankee Stadium) which vaulted it above Safeco for me, of which I'm biased. The scene around the stadium might as well be out of Mad Max, but inside the park is beautiful. You have access to the Metro 7, so you can get there easily enough from other places in the city. Fans and concessions are top knotch. I thought it was affordable overall, especially considering NYC. I totally scored a $150 ticket for around 2/3rds of the price though, so that might be skewing my overall experience, but you could get swill beers for $8, the local taps for $10 (16 oz) and they had bars with more exotic drinks. The double burger at Shake Shack was $11 (and totally delicious).

I only have one more current park to see now, which is the new Yankee Stadium although my ceiling gets raised another click in 2017 when Atlanta opens their new park. Nobody will miss "The Ted", although it seems like a waste after just 20 years of service (it opened after the 1996 Olympics).

Onward!

Congrats. It was really just a matter of "when" with that team after they hired Maddon and a bunch of free agents started giving Theo a discount to come play there. Now it'll be interesting to see how many titles they can string together with this core.
