I have been listening to Stormbringer quite a bit now, too. Great comp that I missed out on for the most part.

i remember a while back Andy saying that what bothered him about this album were the awesome reviews it got. people would put it in the same category of the genre defining albums. everyone i have ever played this album for that listening to rock/ metal at all has liked it.

I highly recommend reading all the Michael Moorcock Elric books (and even the Prince Corum series) to fully understand the Black Pyramid experience.

And....don't forget the comics. The Making Of A Sorcerer is like a prequel to the book series, and both Elric: The Balance Lost and Michael Moorcock's Multiverse had a big impact on me. If you're into comics and graphic novels, look them up.

Demon Lung, to answer your question, or more accurately, to respond to your thoughts - yeah, those reviews did bother me. It's always a bit of a mixed bag for me. Sure, glowing reviews are always flattering. That people think highly of your music, that's something. Though for me, my relationship to the album is different - I view it as a decent debut, though fundamentally flawed because it was rushed. I don't like certain things about the sound of it. So those reviews, they're almost like a slap in the face, because for me, it's like, "Oh you think that highly of it? Huh, wonder what would have happened if we'd had more time to do a better job with the mix." You know that Judas Priest song from the first album, "Never Satisfied?" Well, that's me in a nutshell.

I can't believe I missed out on Stormbringer all this time... I probably saw 'comp' and figured I already had the songs. This thing is really good... Thanks for sending me the copy, Andy! (And, also for the PIT, which is cool.)

Hey, no problem man!! I'm always up for giving back to those who've given so much to the scene over the years....

To be honest, the Stormbringer "comp" is probably the most coherent thing in terms of us being a "band." In my opinion anyways. It's all from this middle period where we were largely collaborative (except for Caravan, which featured Eric Beaudry, original bassist) in the songwriting process. We were all on the same page, and we were also working with Justin P, who I thought did a great job with the sound and the mix.

If you can track it down, the "Suffering Is The Inheritance Of Man" split 7" with Ten Speed Warlock, despite a later release date, was really the start of that period for the band. The song we did was "Blood From The Godless Sky." I based the main riff around a drum beat that Clay was playing at practice. I wrote a shitty bridge initially, and we ended up using Gein's ideas. Justin Pizzoferratu mixed, and although my vocals weren't wonderful, he put them up in the mix. That song was recorded before most of the Stormbringer material, and released way afterwards due to various factors beyond our control, so it's a bit of an anomaly. It represents the beginning of the dynamic we had in that period though....I'm not sure where it all started to change, though that's often what happens.

I really do believe that most of those Stormbringer tracks represent the band at a high point. We were truly working off each others' ideas, and their honestly wasn't as much of that on the first or second album....

Well, honestly that wasn't really the intent, and I'm not exactly sure how things went down and how we ended up where we are.

I'm just really happy to be doing some local shows with the original guys again. That was really the only motivation all along, and the impetus for this happening.

I feel very fortunate that we're all getting along, on the same page, and have another shot at it after everything that's happened and all that we've been through.

It's kind of like what Joni Mitchell said, "And I don't know who I am, but life is for learning...." My life has been a real voyage of self discovery, and this is just another leg of that journey.

Yes, especially to understand Tanelorn - the Eternal city of the all-champion.

You would also have to be fluent in this book:

Yeah, The Worm Ouroboros is a tricky one. The language and "nations" are initially a bit off-putting for some people, you really have to be willing to fully immerse yourself in that world. It's not really Mercury, they aren't really Demons, Witches, etc. Once you get over that, it's a great read. It's very dense, and I find the ending to be absolutely brilliant.

Definitely get some Moorcock LibertyCaps. His stuff is much less dense, very easily readable and digestible, and very imaginative.

Plus, he actually invented the Chaos symbol that we all know and love....
