For a total Dead neophyte what is a good place to start digging in? I'm always told the obvious ones, American Beauty or Workingman's, but what's a little off the beaten path that you'd recommend?

Sure. Tough question the deeper you go down the GoGD rabbit hole.....
Off the beaten path that are widely avail and relatively inexpensive:
Europe '72
From the Mars Hotel (studio '74)
Reckoning (live acoustic 1980)
The Grateful Dead Movie OST Box Set (closing of Winterland Oct. '74, 4 CD comp of 5 night run)
Jerry Garcia-Garcia '72 & Reflections '76

Ask another fan and you'll get a completely different answer. I'm not gonna recommend Dave's Pick 1 Mosque '77 cuz it routinely goes for $500 on ebay now. Enjoy. The older i get, the more this music seems to "click." It's inevitable.

Thanks! Yeah - I figure given the rest of my record collection, it's a weird gap...will check some of these out!

You bet. If you are wanting the original LPs, all are available in the used bins with an extra bit of hunting and deadication! If you find clean 'n green label WB pressings....Grab 'em.

Vol. 29 is gonna be 02-26-77. A masterfully played, well rehearsed & high energy show back to front. The first show of 1977 just off the Terrapin Station recording sessions.

^Thats pretty amazing that Warner Music has blocked a live video of the Dead based on propritary grounds - seeing how the Grateful Dead own all of their music. They have owned their music from very early in their career because they had a very savvy lawyer who told them that the c ost would be well worth it in the long run.
Was the clip a song that they were covering?
The Dead use different rhythm and structure for a lot of their covers so i don't understand how an algorithm could even alert WMG of a cover song.
Maybe the remaining members of the Dead sold their music back to WMG recently, but that would seem odd.

Meet Up At The Movies was so fucking good this year. I couldn’t spare all that cash for the full 5-shows + DVD box, but I’m stoked to relive this particular show when this disc arrives next week.

Hornsby and Jerry trading grins in this...goddamn.

Dave's 35 is gonna be 4-20-84. Looks like a Bobby show to me. Even though 1984 is where the GoGD started to veer into autopilot territory, there was alot of rauchy and bluesy roll too. Mostly due to the energy Bobby brought. The "Scarlet>Fire" here seems to often get best of year marks. Looking forward to cranking it thru my Sansui 990DB & Klipsch Chorus IIs in 3 weeks. Time to start living in the basement again anyways due to the heat.
