The fact that Weedeater is still going strong all over the planet and putting out new material, seems to not bode well for those who think the genre is over.

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but still showing strong.

Travis is no slouch either.
Sure, he's not Keko, but he delivers.

To clarify, I don't think the genre is "over". I think it's great that a band like Weedeater, who I saw play to 50-100 people in Boston for years, is now doing so well. That's awesome. I think there's always going to be a niche for the real bands that are really into slugging and grinding it out like these dudes.

I think that the genre has reached a bit of a critical mass though, in that there's so many new bands popping up, kind of doing things that are already being done better by other bands that came before. I think that's it's getting much harder to stand out amongst the maddening crowd.

This scene wouldn't exist without bands doing things that others had done prior. Is Holy Mountain anything but pure Sabbath worship?

No, it is not anything else, I agree. My point is that Sleep do that really, really well, and they did it before there were tons of bands doing it. Now there are tons of bands trying to sound like Sabbath, and tons of bands trying to sound like Sleep, who were already trying to sound like Sabbath. There's only so much room for listeners and fans to take it all in, and it seems like there are so many releases. It's really hard for me to find anything that really stands out in the genre anymore, there's too much of it all, and most of it is nothing outstanding like Holy Mountain....

Weedeater was one of the first StonerRock bands I saw when I returned to looking at StonerRock at the baptism by fire that was the poorly attended Emissions Chicago 2001. So you could walk right up front. Dixie Dave had dreads down to the floor. I never saw something so overwhelming that close up. It was 4pm. We should support them forever no matter what.

Had my first encounter with Weedeater in 2005 when they opened for Alabama Thunderpussy, Fu Manchu and COC. Dave went through an entire bottle of cold medicine during their 35 minute set and cussed out the crowd twice. Been a fan ever since...

Is the new drummer the dude from Whores? If so, it's an upgrade over Keko - as blasphemous as that might seem.

The new song sounds like Weedeater. No more, no less. And what else would you want? Looking forward to the new album, for sure.

Yes, ad Artimus Pyledriver and another band I can't remember.
I liked Keko, but I think Travis is an upgrade. His talent is almost wasted on Weedeater's simple songs, but he's still fun to watch.

Sounds like Weedeater, a band I still enjoy but have seen so many times that I no longer think they're mandatory whenever they come through town. Would like to see them with the new guy on drums, though.

Travis adds a lot of flare and this go 'round I would hazard to say the Daves are in some of the best form I've ever seen them in.
The band is tight and really good.
No cough medicine these days either.
You should check them out this season.
That is if you still enjoy StonerRock.

I will take your mildly snarky opinion under advisement. It's been a few years, so I'd be up for it if friends are going. Weedeater never fails to deliver.

I've also never seen as much Weedeater merch than this go around.
Besides the usual, there were vinyl offerings of all their recorded output, damn neat 20 shirt and sweatshirt styles, turntable mats, sunglasses (shep hated 'em!), patches, badges, stickers and all in abundance.

What about beef jerky? I remember one time they were touring and selling their own jerky.

I hope that they still sell jerky. I like bison jerky.

The worst thing about Weedeater (now) is the fans. Maybe I'm just getting old.
I wonder if Dave is jealous of Travis stealing the show... sometimes I get that feeling.

when i saw them they were laying with this band that was total garbage. full of hell or something like that. the hip kids were there in full force for full of hell. it seems like alot of people left before weedeater went on.

Weedeater has been packing venues in NYC for a few years now, which is impressive since I've seen them play to a crowd of 6. Seriously.
Lots of hipsters; plus, the young kids bug me. I can't exactly explain why, they just do.

It's not particularily accessible music for the casually curious. weird.
