...and better too.
Prove me wrong.

(Thread inspired by recent posts here and elsewhere. There's a very many good reasons why many longtime music fans are "stuck in the past." I'll freely admit to that. So, show me the error in my ways. I'm all ears. Go.)

How about the past 10 years? 2005 to present. A decade. That's a big chunk of time.

Okay. I'll start. And yes, i fully expect to get a ton of shit for this pick.
Closest thing i've come across yet. Hybrid South African Hip-Hop/Electronica, so it is derivative.....but very interesting just the same. Sick early Aphex "Ageispolis" loop. I like her singular flow. She should have taken the mic more on this track. Great chorus. The production and viddy is slick, yet fun. That skinny wanker needs to shut-up though. It'd be 1K times better w/o him.

ugh....thats was disgusting...

the only "new" hip-hop that I find interesting is Dälek...though they've been around since late 90s.

yeah...a lot of the stuff has been done. however there are bands that do something new and fresh within a genre. I don't have a list of all the bands / albums that emerged in the last decade, nor do I listen to all the music genres but here are some that suprised me with their originality (in no particular order and this is really right off the top of my head cuz I don't have the time to go through all of my music):
Ancestors, Goat, Mr. Peter Hayden, Baroness - Red Album, Inter Arma - The Cavern, Master Musicians of Bukkake, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Elder - Lore

It's easy for a casual listener or a non-fan to say that 95% of the stuff I listen to sounds like Black Sabbath. But, the more specific you get, or closer you pay attention, the more differences you'll find.

I get it, though. My gf likes the Foo Fighters, and I think all FF songs sound alike. And, they all sound so generic to me. However, I don't know any bands that sound like Bongzilla or the Truckfighters.

A killer Aphex Twin loop will get me hooked in every time. It's a relatively untapped Goldmine for Hip-Hop me thinks.

Yeah. Motion within already well established genres is about all we'll get until new technology/instrumentation is developed. I refuse to have a microchip put in my head for it though !!! I ain't gonna be the first "Borgcore" music dupe. Heh.

The most original I can think of is Rodrigo y Gabriela. Their general sound isn't anything super new, I guess, but I don't know of anyone else playing metal on nylon string guitars.

I'll nominate Swans and Wovenhand. And while Inter Arma seems destined to turn into something original, they're nipping at the heels of Morbus Chron. The Sweven album was a game changer for death metal, IMHO.

16 Horsepower/Wovenhand is quality stuff. I've been a fan for awhile now. A very savvy Y'all-ternative + Goth Rock (with a dash of Evangelical spirituality/pathos sprinkled in) amalgamation. But both peanut butter and jelly have been around for awhile. Just sayin'....

So much of what is new, cutting edge and original...it doesn't sound good. Failed art majors who have chops on piano with a fella who knows basic guitar. Generalization I know.

she's been around a bit and her sound is a throw back, but Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings...especially live, holy shit. so good. Caught the Alabama Shakes a few times too...good stuff there too.

Anxious to see Sleep live for the first time in Denver in a few weeks. Caught Om in mpls last fall, left me wanting more...could listen to Al hammer and pull tapping the bass all day.

time to flip the record....

Now playing: Rolling Stones - At Her Satanic Majesty's Request

Rock and pop music moves in circles, always has. Most of the fun is execution anyway. As long as a band isn't copying way too obvious, is full of energy and has some good songs, everything's fine with me. That said, I don't mind original bands either.

I haven't heard too much recently that doesn't already sound like something else.

Generally that is applied to people like us...people who listen to a hundred different Sabbath ripoffs. And the shoe fits.

Only problem is, that new pop that has everybody younger than 25 (and a bunch of forty-somethings at Rolling Stone magazine) tapping their feet? That shit's all been done, too. I'm in my 30s so I lived through a lot of the pop and R+B that is and has been cannibalized for the latest crop of fresh faced hardbodies.

Ed Sheeran sounds like Jason Mraz, complete with even less inspired hip hop leanings. Taylor Swift has gone Wilson Phillips. This stuff ain't new, and it annoys me the credit they are being given. Catchy shit, but it's not innovative any more than Wrong is, really.

Coming across stuff like this def gives me hope for new music.
Already aware of Panda Bear/Animal Collective, but this track is just brilliant.
