I know it'll never be like the old days on StonerRock.com, but I never thought our community of freaks and social misfits would go so quiet. I'm curious as to why there's not nearly as much discussion on here anymore.

Is it because everyone is still Facebooking? (I killed my account over two years ago)
Are we all just old and busy with old people stuff?
Is the music not as interesting to people anymore?
Or does everyone already have a brand new kitchen?

I do see that a bunch of you are still going to shows, which I haven't done in about two years (shame on me), so, that's encouraging.

Anyway, I'm interested in hearing why this board and other boards that I still check in on are like virtual ghost towns. What say y'all?

All of the above, but personally I kind of think Facebook/social media has killed/wounded the message board medium. I don't like it because I like keeping my interests compartmentalized, but I'm obviously in the minority on that. Facebook is so much easier to self-moderate that you're able to filter the bullshit/shitheads out that you want. On boards, even if you block a shithead, you still get to see all the threads with people responding to trolling, attention-whoring and it seems like people got collectively tired of it around the same time (late 2000's decade).

I'm seeing a ton of shows and try to keep up with stuff because I moved to the center of the city's arts district, but my next move is probably somewhere more suburban/cheap and if that happens, then my show days are going to be seriously curtailed or ended.

I guess I should check myself when I say people fled to Facebook to avoid attention-whores. LOL. But say what you want about Facebook, in general, it is very polite.

Damn Facebook! Zuckerberg should be paying people to use it. I get your point about being able to ignore the creeps and trolls, but we dealt with that for years and most of us got to a point where we knew what threads to skip and move on. Oh, well.

I think part of the problem is that the sr.com following splintered into 2....those who come here, those who go to srl. If you were partial to the hi-jinks and randomness from the old site it seems like you gravitate to srl, if you focus on music you come here. Those over at srl's are far more talkative. That's my impression at least.

I don't use Facebook either, so I have no idea how that plays into things. I didn't realize it actually was a potential trap like that.

Yeah, but that whole last year or so of sr.com was pretty sad, with Dan asking for money to keep it open and the noise/signal ratio of the board being completely in the toilet. Seemingly 90% of the good people got fed up and left.

Yeah, I guess I've kind of blocked that out of my memory, but it's true. I guess I'm hoping it's a cyclical thing and maybe in the near future things will pick up again. If Sleep and Tool can put out new albums, anything's possible.

Yeah, SRL gets out of control with silliness and stupidity... not really the crazy, deranged stuff that happened on the old board. But, if a thread starts about music, within a page or two, people are talking about completely random shit. A good example is the thread about the Psycho CA festival.
I think people are getting older and more polite and most of the younger kids in the scene don't do discussion boards- they do Twitter, FB, Instagram, and crap like that.

I see FB is not popular here but if anyone uses it I encourage you to join a great group https://www.facebook.com/groups/doomsto ... udgemetal/ ...it has over 19000 members and quite good admins who don't allow much trolling and other crap. Members of various bands are also in the group, not just the fans...and, of course, our dear H.P. Taskmaster.

I'll believe it when I see it :P.

I check in daily and think I still post as much as usual, but I'm also in the midst of finishing up my last semester of college courses before my field placement starts during the last half of the semester. So, busy times.

I don't think I've been to SRL since it first started. Is that where a lot of people went? Or is it the same deal as here?

I'm pretty sure I chose this site over SRL because someone had already taken "Josh" as a screen name. NOT COOL.

I tried posting on both, but this place seemed to have a "no fun" policy. I think this is my first post here in like... three years, or more?

I've been super busy with producing my radio show lately for Free Radio Santa Cruz 101.3 fm so I haven't been posting on message boards in general much. I had bassist Bob Daisley on again last Sunday and gonna interview an actual legend Marvel Comics artist this Sunday! And I'm planning on getting Chunk from the Goonies on my show soon.

Just not really into message boards in general these days ,but still look at this place on occasion. Imo this site is the best when it comes to up to date info about heavy music. Been on FB alot lately too.

I'm on Facebook a lot. A lot of bands post stuff on there now, as well as numerous groups about doom/sludge/stoner/whatever metal. I need to start posting more on here, but yeah, a lot of shit goes on on Facebook, for better or worse. Technology, maaaaaaan.

The other board has more action, but not much more. Personally I've spent a lot less time online than I did when I started posting on Stonerrock more than a decade ago. At the time I was more eager to discover new music since I just started getting into the genre in the early 2000s. Maybe I don't really have that frenzied attitude of consumption anymore, and my sporadic board activity reflects that. I think some people are the same way.

Can't be age, because I was significantly younger than the average when I started. Maybe it's Facebook. Probably it really is apps and phones and netflix and various other electronic distractions. Message boards are old hat, unless you're a hacker. "A black hat hacker named Hackworth", as they said in that Chris Hemsworth bomb. Say that shit five times fast.

I appreciate the quietness here as opposed to the full-force asshattery over at SRL. Glad to be able to come here and learn more about music (most recently the Yob tour). Still reluctantly going over there to be amused, though to me it's not so different from "I'll just look at Facebook one more time to see if someone posted something."

I often joke on SRL that when I want to talk about music, I go to the Obelisk. I don't post a lot in either place, but some people post a ton on SRL.

It's the ebb and flow of things. This genre of music has gone as far as it will go (much like the perjorative decline of Hip-Hop and Heavy Metal spinning off into caricatures of themselves after their decade had passed). I think the lack of interest lately reflects this sentiment.
I am the anomaly because I was never really here for the music. I don't even like Stoner Rock. I remember searching for the pre-Black Sabbath, 'when I came down', recordings in 2007 and was directed to SR.com, I just never left.

I'm just too too busy with work stuff. In fact, I WISH I could cancel my FB page, but I have to keep it for... work contacts. Yay.

When I have a free minute I pop over here and I'm always let down with how little is posted. The thread views are there, but I think we are the forum of lurkers. I'll try to post more stuff.

I actually wanted to post the other day about how consummately let down I still am that Spirit Caravan had zero shows in southern California. Zero! I figured they would come back around, but then all that bad shit happened with Wino in Europe. But now Wino is doing shows with Black Label Society - and again, no southern california shows! What gives? Is the guy trying to avoid an ex girlfriend that lives in the area or something?

There have been some good clips(old and new) posted on youtube recently

Spirit Caravan rules, but it's tough to generate the same enthusiasm for them seeing them as a 44 year old versus a 30 year old. In an online review sense. Thus, the lack of online words/content from the oldsters who still care about Spirit Caravan and that scene.

I'll try to do better about posting stuff that impressed me as an old, jaded fuck, but most of it will probably fall outside of the stoner/doom format. I think it's been pretty apparent that the recent trend to cinematic stuff (John Carpenter/GOBLIN) and their scion (ZOMBI) has been the biggest musical thing for me on here lately.

For instance, really nothing beats the John Carpenter album as far as good music goes in 2015 goes.

The excitement and blush of brand new music never lasts with me. It goes in cycles at best. It's just the way things are. I'm an old-schooler at heart too. Vintage and vintage sounding bands are what keeps me still checking in. Got zero interest in internet beefs and other people's bullshit. But the passion and love for late 60's/70's era Acid Rock/Heavy Psych/Psychedelia music and the early founders of the SR genre has never waned for myself. It's awesome that Goatsnake and Acid King are releasing new CDs! Very happy about that.
