Live double LPs. I've been on a buying tear lately. What are some of your faves?

most of those live double albums of the 70s didn´t age too well
songs are way too long and filled with hilariously boring guitar or drum solos
then there are those horrible rock´n´roll medleys which were a staple in the 70s unfortunately
worst examples are deep purple´s "made in japan" and "the song remains the same" by led zeppelin (how the west was won is 1000 times better)
still absolutely great are lizzy´s "live and dangerous" and "strangers in the night" by ufo (ufo live from 71 is my fave though) also i love the full cheap trick at budokan and ramones "it´s alive"
the best live album is still "kick out the jams" by the mc 5
followed by who live at leeds - both single lps though

Rush - Exit Stage Left

Listening to this as a youngster, it was especially this version of "Passage to Bangkok" that got me venturing into their 70s stuff. Being born in '74, I was initially exposed to Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, etc.....than went back

Ah, I just listened to Exit Stage Left the other day. I like that one, but I like the earlier All The World's A Stage better - I love the first 4 Rush albums. Alex Lifeson is a monster on that one.

Some of my other favorite double live albums are

Grand Funk Live Album - captures the excitement of a rock show perfectly. When I listen to that, I feel like I'm sitting in the back row of a smoke-filled arena.

Grateful Dead Live Dead - the Dark Star never gets old

Iron Maiden Live After Death - We shall never surrender!

I absolutely love...

Grateful Dead- Europe '72
(a triple album and I think Pigpen's final on vinyl)

Exit Stage Left is somehow still missing from the collection. Need.

Hawkwind - Space Ritual
Grand Funk - Live

Those are the two that I prefer over any of the respective bands' studio output.

I'm not even that big of a KISS fan, but they still deserve a nod for this one. Its their best damn album after all...

A lot of great stuff is already listed, but Zappa Live in New York is a good one too. And I'll second UFO's Strangers in the Night.

I'm sure I'll catch some flack for this, but Decade of Aggression is worth a mention. The recording isn't great, Lombardo's fuck up during Angel of Death is ridiculous, and the slurred vocals aren't good selling points, but it is fucking Slayer.

Grand Funk of course. BOC and UFO. Deep Purple Made In Japan I listened to over and over in high school. But for the love of God how could we forget...

Sure. Live TLPs work too. Might have to look for that Yes set now too.

Tasty playing. Many songs really fleshed out. Crowd big part of the show. The love is flowin'.

It seems to be out of scope when looking at the suggestions so far but my favourite double live album as well as favourite album by the band is Decade Of Agression by Slayer. First Slayer I was ever exposed to and I can't help but preferring those live versions of their classic thrash metal cuts over the mostly shabbily recorded studio versions. Also if you appreciate Decade... you don't ever need to go to a Slayer show and mingle with their moronic fans 'cause their setlist hasn't changed significantly over the next 2,5 decades

And Space Ritual gets the +1
