A thread for all things Maiden.

Image
The "Powerslave" stage; arguably the finest stage setup in the history of rock.

When father time threatened to slow down Iron Maiden…
they simply added another guitar.

When our team is working late at the office I like to unplug my headphones and play the intro to "Aces High" with Chuchill's marble mouthed rallying speech. It seems to work.

I got the feeling very early on that people here never really...appreciated Iron Maiden. I don't know if this board is populated by younger dudes or just people that are indignantly holding the torch for 90s rock (my least favorite decade in music) so I never expected our tastes to be congruent.

The album where most people started to give up can be looked back upon with a certain dreamy-eyed fondness now; enough time has passed.

After failing 9th grade Algebra 1 (15 yrs old) - I guess this was like 1980 or 81 or so (?), I had to take it in summer school. Judas Priest was coming through town and the next day after the show I was at my summer school class and a bunch of folks were wearing this shirt with a corpse holding a bloody axe from a band called Iron Maiden - was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I had heard of them but never heard them. On the way home from school, I stopped at Sound Warehouse in Dallas and bought the album Killers. I've been hooked since that day - totally bought into it based on the cool t-shirt/album art! Killers is still my favorite Maiden album but I do enjoy Powerslave, Number of the Beast, and Piece of Mind quite a bit. Saw them finally with Saxon and Fastway on the Piece of Mind tour and it slayed!

It's one of those rare bands I heard in my teens and still like them...Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is still my favourite heavy metal album.

One point-Naming the album "The Number of the Beast" was a huge mistake at least in the U.S. Right at the time that Satanic cult repressed memory bullshit was taking off. Seems like that completely changed how they were received. They did ok obviously but I wonder if they would be like Aerosmith or something if they had not used that. Metallica never when all devily on purpose I'd say. I mean I never saw a video on MTV or heard a song on the radio(at least at daylight hour) of theirs, I swear it's because of that album title. One, that was on constantly.

I think it's a matter of there's just not much to say other than yeah the first 7 albums are awesome.
7th son may be my favorite too.

Saw the World Piece Tour 1983 with Saxon And Fastway opening. I was 15. (Thanks for driving me, Kevin and Brad there and picking us up after, Mom...) Then i kinda lost interest for some reason. All the records up to that are awesome!

They had so much material by the time I found them at age 12 that it was the main band by far for a few years, nothing else had the heavy and consistent rotation. So this changes everything for the chemical release in my body. Just as I pictured.

I've always been a 70's Priest kind of guy, but I dig on some Maiden from time to time. The first half of Piece of Mind is where it's at for me.

Powerslave was not my first Maiden album, but it was the one that sold me on them and may remain my favorite. I like all the ones I've got though....Killers and Number Of The Beast on vinyl, Powerslave, Piece Of Mind, Somewhere In Time and Fear Of The Dark on cd. And to think, when I was in college ten years ago, I thought they sucked. Tastes change.

I stopped listening to Maiden during the later albums of the first Dickinson era(Seventh Son,&Somewhere in Time) because Bruce was just getting waaay too operatic in his vocals and I couldn't digest it. Now I can rediscover that stuff and appreciate it. Or some of it at least. I understand his perspective on it all, that his voice had to go into new territories just like the songs were doing but he left behind the perfect balance of snarl and skill that made albums like Powerslave so classic.
I saw Maiden at Madison Square Garden in 2001(I think) and they played a lot of new stuff. They don't do that anymore. Props to them for realizing that if you're Maiden you already have a catalogue that can't be beat.
That clip above is pretty impressive in that Bruce is revisiting those songs with the really dynamic singing and even though he's clearly lost an octave or two, he pulls it off.

Actually they still do that (play mostly new stuff) a lot. Pretty much every time they put out a new album:

Dance of Death World Tour 2003-2004 Setlist

"Declamation" served as the intro for the tour.

3."Can I Play with Madness" (from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, 1988)

5."Dance of Death" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
6."Rainmaker" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
7."Brave New World" (from Brave New World, 2000)
8."Paschendale" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
9."Lord of the Flies" (from The X Factor, 1995)
10."No More Lies" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
11."Hallowed Be Thy Name" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982)
12."Fear of the Dark" (from Fear of The Dark, 1992)
13."Iron Maiden" (from Iron Maiden, 1980)

Encore
1."Journeyman" (from Dance of Death, 2003
2."The Number of the Beast" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982
3."Run to the Hills" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982

A Matter of Life and Death World Tour 2006 Setlist

Gustav Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" served as the intro for the tour.
1."Different World" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
2."These Colours Don't Run" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
3."Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
4."The Pilgrim" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
5."The Longest Day" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
6."Out of the Shadows" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
7."The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
8."For the Greater Good of God" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
9."Lord of Light" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
10."The Legacy" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
11."Fear of the Dark" (from Fear of the Dark, 1992)
12."Iron Maiden" (from Iron Maiden, 1980)

Encore
1."2 Minutes to Midnight" (from Powerslave, 1984)
2."The Evil That Men Do" (from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, 1988)
3."Hallowed Be Thy Name" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982)

The Final Frontier 2011 Setlist

1."Satellite 15... The Final Frontier" (from The Final Frontier, 2010)
2."El Dorado" (from The Final Frontier, 2010)
3."2 Minutes to Midnight" (from Powerslave, 1984)
4."The Talisman" (from The Final Frontier, 2010)
5."Coming Home" (from The Final Frontier, 2010)
6."Dance of Death" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
7."The Trooper" (from Piece of Mind, 1983)
8."The Wicker Man" (from Brave New World, 2000)
9."Blood Brothers" (from Brave New World, 2000)
10."When The Wild Wind Blows" (from The Final Frontier, 2010)
11."The Evil That Men Do" (from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, 1988)
12."Fear of the Dark" (from Fear of the Dark, 1992)
13."Iron Maiden" (from Iron Maiden, 1980)

Encore
1."The Number of the Beast" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982)
2."Hallowed Be Thy Name" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982)
3."Running Free" (from Iron Maiden, 1980)

This is the primary reason I haven't seen the band since 1990. That and they don't play in Portland (or anywhere in Oregon for that matter) anymore. I haven't given up on them, but I'm picking my spot to see them again. They seemingly do these revival tours (World Slavery, Somewhere Back in Time, Maiden England) in between their "proper album" tours, so this would be the time to see them. I don't know, 2015 is the 30th anniversary of 'Live After Death'. We can hope, I guess?

Yeah, looks like it. Upon researching it, it appears I saw the "Brave New World" tour- and man, that setlist was paltry pickings for the classics. Then the very next tour was the "Give Em Ed Till They're Dead" tour that had ALL the classics.

I definitely have to catch them again. On the right tour...

I feel like Maiden and 90's rock can sit hand in hand, at least they always have in my book. I'm largely influenced by 90's alt/indie/shoegaze/grunge/post-hardcore/AmRep/stoner/whatever you want to call it all. That was when I was a teen and just getting into music, and that period will always hold a special place in my being. Still, I liked 80's metal and hardcore at the same time.

I appreciate the shit out of Maiden, and I love Somewhere In Time and 7th Son Of A Seventh Son. Always have. I'll take either of those albums over Powerslave, which to me is their weakest of the "classic" Dickinson era (first five Dickinson albums).

I especially appreciate the first two albums, with Di'Anno. Those to me are some of the greatest metal albums, ever. There simply is no comparison. None.

Last two times I saw them where all classics from the first five and the first seven albums respectively. Fantastic shows, both of them.

The time before that they played A Matter of Life and Death in it's entirety, and while that's not a bad album, the show wasn't that great.

If anyone's interested, the new 180g vinyl reissues of the first seven albums are all pretty amazing, with the possible exception of NotB, which doesn't sound better than an older copy I have.

Yeah, that's the way to go for sure, but the thing with me at least is I saw both of those tours the first time and we get a ton of killer shows in this town, so travelling to see this is tough to justify.

Yeah, they have been doing that for quite a while now. But they've said that this latest tour, Maiden England, is the last 80s-themed tour as they've concluded the reiusse cycle.
And no, there won't be a Live After Death 30th Anniversary tour. They did a tour on that theme a while back, the Somewhere Back In Time Tour.
Next up is a new album and tour, and efter that no one knows.

So after some extensive research my brother figured out that the only song Iron Maiden has never played live is..

The lyrics are interesting because they reference a being called "The Lamia."

Listen to me Lamia, listen to what I've got to say.
I've got these feelings, and they won't go away.
I've got these fears inside that'll bring me to my knees.
Oh help me Lamia or I'm sure I'll die, oh please.

I feel unsettled, now I know that I've done wrong.
I've messed around with mystic things and magic for too long.
I feel I'm being paid with this nightmare inside me,
The devil's got a hold on my soul and he just won't let me be.

I'm on my knees, oh help me please.
I'm on my knees, help me please.

Oh Lamia please try to help me.
The devil's got a hold of my soul and he won't let me be.
Lamia I've got this curse, I'm turning to bad.
The devil's got a hold of my soul, and it's driving me mad. Oh

Oh Lamia please try to help me.
The devil's got a hold of my soul and he won't let me be.
Lamia I've got this curse, I'm turning to bad.
The devil's got a hold of my soul, and it's driving me mad. Oh

it seems that song is intrinsically linked with the Genesis track of the same name.

Peter Gabriel would have himself immersed in a giant conical Lamia portrait at the end of their 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' concerts!!

Wait, is there a totally new album or something I don't know about?
